Seigneur Michael Beaumont is a hipocrit here.  I seem to recall the local Sark directors at one time making millions tax free until the Edwards Report blasted the practice.

Yet according to the Telegraph (or perhaps the Barclaygraph would be a better term), it was the noble Barclays who singlehandedly blasted that practice! Wonderful how you can rewrite history when you own a newspaper!

Quite an interesting follow up on this story from the Guardian:

Conseiller Peter Cole supposes that if you are a billionaire living within a tax haven, it would only be natural to want to control the parliament. "I imagine that's what it was, but nobody knows."

How gutted would they be if Sark was to cease being a tax-haven, after building that palace there. LOL!

Just at update - the Barclay Brothers have recently attacked Private Eye over a spoof:

"The item, in Eye 1264, was a mock Telegraph front page (“Expenses Scandal Day 94”) exposing two tax-dodging brothers living on “the remote Channel Island of Brilleau” who pay a team of hacks to pontificate on MPs’ tax avoidance and other financial wheezes, and who acquired the newspaper from a convicted fraudster."

They also stopped the Sark postmistress from posting a copy of said page on the wall in the Post Office by threat of legal action.

Basically, they appear (from my point of view) to be acting like very insecure children who have never really grown up, and have the money to get their own way (by bullying anyone who criticises them) most of the time.

What they'll make of the band which calls itself "The Reclusive Barclay Brothers", goodness only knows!

How little things have changed. The exploits of the Barclay twins are back in Private Eye once again:

Quote
The hotels are still shut, as are all the twins’ shops in the Main Street. Last week their vineyard workers began chopping down vines and pulling up stakes; in due course these will be burnt – a symbolic representation of the Barclays’ scorched-earth attitude to the island, perhaps.
