There are quite a few environmentalist blogs locally - I've just added a new one to my "sidelist" of blogs, and they often provide not just local perspectives but global ones as well.
I suppose the alternate area is Facebook for events and shorter comments on more general local matters - a beautiful sunset, Grassroots festival, Oddsocks, etc. - that allows people short one-line comments on anything, photos etc.
It's a quicker medium really than blogs, where people have to think about what they want to say, and compose the blog (even if they are cut/pasting some material).
Notably most politicians with blogs have put some interesting stuff there, but then nothing is posted for ages; they have other things to do with their time. For example, Simon Crowcroft had some good stuff on Parish matters but then it just was left alone.
And it does require some time, and thought, if one is going to be saying something different, not repeating, and being varied. But there is some variation even in the more political blogs, which is the way I'd like to nudge them - Voice had an interview with a lady on housing, and has recently posted on the lack of toilets in BHS (despite having a food area).
