Putting more money in to worker's pockets should help the economy, so long as the employer can afford it, and the States of Jersey can afford it.

The States of Jersey is funded by the tax-payers; I'm a tax-payer and I can't afford it.

The States should be trying to get the job asked of it by the electorate done as cheaply and efficiently as possible: Cheap and efficient, not words that come to mind when I think of States employees; particularly manual workers.

Quite right white knight, my partner is a manual worker and I a civil servant both working 37hrs. I sit behind a computer most of the time and its a tiring and demanding job, he works out in all weathers doing dirty dangerous work that takes know how and engineering skills, why shouldn't he get paid decently for it!  TLS sent us all an email to today informing us that no money this year, that I guess means not even a cost of living, but everythng has gone up! how is that fair?  we don't all lean on shovels or take endless tea breaks.

Hi ageofaquarius,

Just to say I work in the private sector and there is no pay rise for me in 2009 either. I'm just glad to have a job and am cutting my cloth accordingly.

Hopefully some restraint in 2009  - by us all - will ensure that we're all in better shape in 2010

I take it you've never employed a soul in your entire life off your own back?

Isn't this thread a bit passé? The manual workers settled on 3.2% last month, after a years pointless arguing.

mpwpj you should get a job doing manual work if you wish to earn more money. You know the saying "where there is muck, there is money".

It's not just manual work though, I'd specifically need to be employed by the States.  I have in the past (and maybe I presently do) done various jobs that have equivalent States manual worker positions, only for considerably less pay.
