Eco Friendly Parking?
« on: February 01, 2008, 12:37:17 PM »
The first eco friendly parking permits will be handed out today.

Drivers of certain low emission cars will be able to get half price parking with the new permits.

Politicians say it's an incentive for us to buy cars that will make a difference to the environment.

Vehicles eligible for the permits are those that emit less than one hundred grams of CO2 per kilometer.

These drivers will get half price parking - otherwise charges for other cars are going up today.

I just wonder how many people actually own eco-friendly cars?  1 out of 50 perhaps?  Yet more spin from a hopeless Deputy guy de faye who is apparently close to a vote of no confidence.....

I found a figure, there are 20-30 out of over 100,000 cars in Jersey that are classed under the band of eco-friendly.

Talk about spin!

My car emits 109 grams of C02 per kilometer so full price for me  :(

Still I have private parking to avoid the vandals.

"About twenty islanders will qualify for the new half-price parking scheme.

To benefit you'll need to own a Honda Civic Hybrid, Toyota Prius, Seat Ibiza or Volkswagen Polo Blue Motion.

The rest of us will have to pay more.

The scheme is aimed at encouraging islanders to drive greener cars.

The first owners of a Hybrid have already claimed their eco-friendly permits.

Transport Minister Deputy Guy De Faye hopes others will follow suit".

About 20 !

If De Faye, as Transport Minister, seriously wants to make a 'green' difference to trafffic on the island (and ease congestion on the major roads) a more effective option would to be to reinstate the railway system.

I've always thought it a little odd that our States seem so preoccupied with forcing the modernisation of Jersey, yet have never paid any concern to the fact that we're probably the only developed nation in the world without a rail network.

Agreed, given the size of Jersey a good tube network would remove the need for cars for the purpose of personal travel, even a tram system would make a big difference.

The main problem with a tube network would be the huge cost. If that small section of sunken road at the Waterfront is going to cost £25 million, can you imagine the expense of a tube system?

The benefit of an overground railway is that we already large strips of the original line that could be put back to use fairly quickly, simply by laying the tracks. It'd be relatively cheap and easy to get up and running.

I agree, really a tube network should have been built years ago ready for the future but with modern times a overground railway would suffice very well.  Even with the size of Jersey a monorail service would operate quite nicely.  Still what me must remember is that we have a transport minister who has no clue about transportation or common sense, we should replace him with an ex manager from Transport for London.  While i'm at it will somebody please send him a razor, he looks like a tramp.

I think one of the other problems is that we have a hell of a lot of Eastern European cars on our roads now.  I don't know what the figures are but I see a lot passing through town every day.  The island just has too many cars now.

When we get into the Summer Hire cars will just make it worse.

If De Faye, as Transport Minister, seriously wants to make a 'green' difference

He could move away from wasting millions on a new incinerator.
