Oh so it is safe to drive without insurance then and everybody else pays extra premiums for the people who refuse to pay?

What?  Are you saying you would rather see an innocent person being damaged after a car that is unroad worthy spins out of control and then to top it up the person has no insurance because they cannot afford it?

It's more likely that will happen to a speeding car or one being driven by a drunk driver.  From your post's in this thread you appear to have an obsession with the poor and want to blame everything on them

What?  I am not obsessed with poor people, I am saying that if people cannot afford insurance, a decent car or even an MOT then they should not be on the road.

These people are dangerous.

Two vehicles impounded in St Lawrence road check

Two vehicles were impounded during a rush hour road check in St Lawrence on Thursday morning.

One small commercial vehicle, with two defective tyres and a leaking fuel filler cap, was impounded to a workshop for repair and a second small commercial vehicle, suspected of being overloaded, was impounded at the check until some of the load had been removed. Two drivers were advised regarding the manner in which their vehicles were loaded.

Almost 1000 vehicles were checked - Nine drivers were issued with defect notices, one driver was found to be driving without a valid licence and a further two drivers were required to produce their driving documents at the St Lawrence Parish Hall.

Officers from Driver and Vehicle Standards and the Honorary Police of St. Lawrence joined forces to conduct the road check on Le Chemin Des Moulins in St Peters Valley.

Inspector of Motor Traffic, Alan Muir told Channel Online: "As in the St John road check last week, the standard of vehicle passing through this busy road check was generally good. A couple of vehicles belonging to the same operator were found to be overloaded. This can cause handling problems for the driver and affect the braking so is a serious safety concern. It is the driver’s and operator’s responsibility to ensure that any load is within the vehicle’s capacity and evenly distributed."

And MOT's wouldn't have any difference to the defects :-\

The MOT only encourages fraud and will add to the financial burden.
Let the road checks continue.

I think we should have a Jersey MOT.

Brakes work................................Check.
Lights  work................................Check.
No,"Jaggy bits sticking out"..........Check.
No oil spilling on road...................Check.

No Way!
How many old wrecks do you see on the road?
Road checks is all that is needed over here. It is only a way of money making for the garages etc. It was stated in an interview by a garage owner that most garages could not afford the equipment so only the few big garages would be able to carryout the checks. There would be a waiting list and no doubt you would find that your cert was out of date hence breaking the law. Also remember 5% on the bill GST another nice little earner for our tax department which would allow the States to waste more of our money on other wild schemes or golden handshakes on the side.

Or it could be another ploy to make us all use the bus.

How do you make a traffic cops eyes light up?

if there is one thing i like about the "jersey way " is the lack of mot .
40 mph speed limit and the road side check at night  weeds out the bad lights.
in fact its newer vehicles which appear to have  one taillight  not working  .
you do not see alot of complete rubbish on the roads  these days
even the farmers trailler is in better nick than it was .
i did hear someone bleating on about  the kind of shoes  we wear or not as the case maybe  for driving .
 high heels .
 flip flops .
 no shoes
so maybe we will have to wear steel toe capped boots for driving.  i find the wife shoes are too tight for driving  in  and the dress a bit draughty.
i think more of world drives in flip flops than any shoe.

3 things have vastly improved the condition of cars in Jersey over the last 20 years or so.

1) Cars are built better - when is the last time you saw a car die of rust?! with mechanicals still going strong.
2) Affluence - Folks can (or could!) afford nice cars, which filters down to the s/h market.
3) DVS - all s/h cars get inspected upon import, so nowadays we don't get the MOT failures coming to Jersey (by private owners or traders to "patch up").

Of course all that means that if the States / DVS want another Dept they will bring in MOT's - indeed, they may be forced to by the EU if Jersey cars want to be allowed onto EU roads.

Some goods points Yokel.

The cars in Jersey also travel at no more ( by law ) than 40mph so less stress on parts of the vehicle. If they really want to get the rubbish off the roads then go visit the building sites, but as you rightly point out the cars / vans are relatively in good condition as the owners are not short of money compared to other places.

The only reason that the MOT would be brought in is to earn garages big bucks . It is unlikely that Brussels would make a law banning outside vehicles as several countries cars including Russia's motorists, travel in European countries.

MoT is a non starter in Jersey, unless someone in high offices pocket is getting oiled.

sorry boatboy, the  private  cars used on the site i am on ,whilst dirty are  not too bad . and most  tradesman who are employed are using the firms van as the firm  has nowhere to park , the work vehicle .
loads of people  stopped today, did' nt matter what you were driving,  if  you were on the phone  or whatever  you were stopped .
if the eu wanted  us to have  a mot, why not just get one to go to europe  if  your not going  to europe , you dont  need one .
