A bridge to France?

New campaign for bridge to France

A Jersey man is promoting the idea of a road bridge between the island and Normandy.

Peter Walsh has been in discussion with senior civil servants and has also written to President Sarkozy of France to seek his support.

The idea of a bridge between Jersey and France has been suggested before but always dismissed as impractical.

But Mr Walsh said bridges from Denmark to Sweden showed a bridge could pay its way through tolls in 25 years.

He says the bridge would allow Jersey to expand its economy without creating local housing problems and there would also be huge savings on freight.

He also suggested that tidal electricity turbines could be attached to the piers of the bridge allowing the island to generate its own electricity.

My only comment is that by the time 25 years arrives Jersey will probably be empty.

Deputy Duhamel was on the radio talking about at lunch time today .He discussed the bridge they went to see in Sweden/Denmark.People have moved to cheaper areas in Sweden and commute daily to work .Think he is saying we all live in France ,and commute in to Jersey where it will be a huge industrial estate full of Finance houses .
I think he said the French Government would be pleased and lots of space to build homes on ,also plenty of Finance vacancies to be filled there.
From my own knowledge, work on that side is very limited unless you all speak French ,or good at gardening and pig slaughtering

Would need to be one very substantial bridge. Most bridges of this length are either causeways or located in much calmer waters.

I can't see that the French would be too happy with thousands of Jersey people buying houses there!  ;D

It was actually part tunnel ,then they created a man made nature reserve where the tunnel ended ,then through this reserve and final part was the bridge.
Supposed to be a magnificent bit of engineering .Just going to google it to find out some more.
Maybe the States of Jersey would come to a deal with French Government to buy large areas of land ,where they could build huge concentration camps to house all the Jersey workers.
The only ones that could stay in Jersey would be the 1.1K's or other highly selected people .
Buses would ferry workers in each day ,with armed guards to ensure they all go back at night to France.:-)

Well from the way they are building flats they are getting pretty experienced at building something that will only last for a short space of time.

Can somebody ask if they'll build one to the UK while they're at it?

maybe they can make the bridge quite a bit wider so that they can build flats on it all the way to France.

Oh my God, hope its not a Dandara Bridge! Imagine the build quality... :o

I'm all for it so long as nobody puts flags of that life enriching golden duck all down it.  What a postcard!  While we are at it can we introduce Bi-lingual education?  If tomorrows generation speaks French and English they may just want to go back and forth all the time.  If truly feasable to build I think it would be wrong to be 100% private, if it can pay for itself in 35 years then future profits can help pay my pension and and give my grandchildren reduced nursary fees.

It's a nice change in the news but I really would love to see it in my lifetime, i'd be a commutter who enriches during the day and swims in fine wine and cheese by night.

I'm sure the economic benefits, over time, would be huge. It would be very, very ugly though, and isn't there a RAMSAR site near where it would come ashore?

Nobody, least of all Peter Walsh, seems to have given much thought to all this daily traffic coming onshore at La Rocque....and then driving along all those, erm, nice wide roads into town.

Surely, to be financially viable, it would require a road similar to Victoria Avenue to bring all these French based workers and lorries into town? Would you vote for another Victoria Avenue? I wouldn't.
