I think he is fully justified. Central government should pay for this, not the parish. That's a lot of money for the parish to have to find.

I agree.

And it has to be said, I sense a definite attempt by the JEP to paint Crowcroft as the 'bad guy', depriving the children, using terms such as "pull the plug" and "refuse to pay".... ::)

I agree with you too, it should be the central government, it's just people complain about the kids hanging about the streets and down the waterfront and then services are not provided for them. I have done some work at the youthclub in liberation square and there is not much to it, the equipment is basic and some times there can be hundreds of kids in there.

Apparently, we'll soon have a tax surplus of £66m, and still they can't come up with the cash for this. You would have thought that we could have youth facilities second to none, available for all youngsters.

I'm sure that many of those who would use youth clubs, etc., in town would be from other parishes, so stands to reason that the States should dust of their wad and pay for this.

I think all youth workers should be offered pay for their time, if they want it.

I just have to say this government has done nothing for the youth here in jersey. I'm told by youngsters that they are now being told that for them, to have a skateboard park they themselves must come up with the funds.  How pathetic . The total neglect of youth facilities is just another reason I'm eager to stand in the coming election.

Any views on this issue ?

ALVIN.

I think the main problem here is money Alvin.  If I go back to the 70’s (showing my age now) kids basically had more places to go to because we had a thriving tourist industry.  From the top of my head we had places like Funland, Fort Regent was a major tourist attraction and there were a lot of places spread across the Island that have since been closed down and either changed into houses or flats.  So back in the 70’s and even the 80’s the Government need not do anything to really step in and help young bored people.  I know there has been a recent manifesto item by Jeremy in re-vamping Fort Regent.  But this already costs tax payers in excess of £20 Million a year to keep lit up staffed, heated and cleaned etc so really should it be closed completely?

I also know that the same candidate has suggested private investment.  But who would privately invest in something to help young people up the Fort?  If they opened up a tender for a Casino up there that may be different.

Digressing.  I think Simon Crowcroft should have supported this anyway and that is solely from the amount of young people living in town with nothing to do but perhaps get drunk and get into trouble.  Unfortunately we have a generation now that has been brought up in an Island that can only be boring for them but you have to ask, who is to blame?

Would you not agree . Investment in the youth and tourism and the islands infrastructure is far more important than throwing £570.000 into improving jerseys bloody image.

GOVERNMENT COULD DO THAT OVER NITE BY ACTUALLY SHOWING THEY CARE ABOUT JERSEY THEMSELVES.
