Do you want an end to the fulfilment industry - The Poll
« on: December 27, 2011, 12:09:39 AM »
The States have have for many islanders made the mistake of supporting only one industry finance.

HM Revenue and Custom says

Most of this trade is from, or via, the Channel Islands. This reform will ensure that UK companies, especially small and medium sized enterprises, can compete on a level playing field with companies operating in the Channel Islands.

What are your thoughts and take part in the citizens poll.

funny  how guernsey , s  budget for the legal team  was  cheaper than jersey's .
joint action  from the islands , with the  costs passed onto the   affected , businesses, if  the islands win.
and i only support the move , as  the extra  unemployed ,  may cost me (  a worker , not getting any  goverment support)more money from my shrinking pocket .

It is very unlikely to be successful.

But, the change is discriminatory against the Channel Islands.

For example, I have bought gear from this company when they were just an ebay seller, and were undercutting Amazon:

They are based in Hong Kong, and have clearly grown substantially, selling to UK customers.

Lets not forget the Uk is not closing down the fulfiment industry, its stopping LVGR.
That makes Jersey business operate on the same level playing field as UK operators with no tax advantages.
If they can't compete without abusing this tax loophole, they should be left to go to the wall.
Only the business owners themselves know how much it will effect them. For example, how many items do Play.com sell below £18 that qualify for LVGR and how many items above that theshold which won't make any difference at all.

It won't be a "level playing field", because shipping stuff to Jersey, and back to UK, will be more expensive.

Boots say they will continue to ship from the Channel Islands, at the same price:
http://www.opticianonline.net/Articles/2011/12/09/28695/Boots+to+absorb+any+LVCR+costs.htm

I can imagine they keep a large stock of contact lenses, and it would make little sense to move the stock they already have to UK.

This notches up the game, I thought we had a judge and a top lawyer in the the States. With their knowledge of the law why should a legal challenge cost so much ?

Call me slow but could they not case manage it and just get researchers to do the leg work. Now that would get them respect and rather than stuffing more money in number 7 Bedford Rows pockets, the money saved could go to the mens refuge who desperately need it.

TAXPAYERS could be stuck with a £5m bill over the legal challenge to the UK’s plans to crack down on Jersey’s internet mail order industry.

A legal cost expert says that the ‘worst case scenario’ is a cost of £3m to £5m, and has warned that the current estimate of £360,000 is way out.

I think many of the costs would not be under their control, i.e. court costs, and having to pay the UK's legal costs, when Jersey loses.

Even if this is successful, it would take years for that to happen. By which time, local fulfillment companies will have already shut-down, or moved.

Just another waste of public money.

If the fullfillment companies wish to continue trading, let them fight their own legal battles.

And, pay unemployment benefit to all those made redundant.

I think any directors worth their salt will have already moved operations to a difference jurisdiction  and gone underground together with their email lists.  I guess only leaving the skeleton of a former fulfillment  website and local industry in Jersey in the hope that something can be salvaged for their employees.

Just a personal viewpoint! I have no evidence or knowledge that this has taken place but if I were a director within the localindsuctry that is what I would have done immediately I knew there were dark clouds forming in the distance.  It would just mean that the industry in Britain will still suffer because of these companies imports but the Government will have no idea where they are operating from.  If they wish to save their industry they will then have to apply the rules applied to Jersey when the new law regarding Low-value consignment relief comes into force to every jurisdiction in the world.
