Super Fast Internet.
« on: December 15, 2011, 07:59:57 PM »
Now that ozouf has given the £19m to JT and he was telling everybody that "Every household will have super fast internet like nowhere else in the world".
Now we find out once the money has gone throught the States ( very more questions should have been asked )  it will cost £60 - £70 per month. Now tell me who the hell can afford that in these times and never mind if we were not in these times of counting every penny. The only people to be able to have super fast internet will be once again the rich and companies. Why didn't anybody ask the question what it would cost each household?
ozouf done it again!  Spend the money then find out that what he has been saying is lies in such that every household will have it!

When they talk about £60 per month that would be for the top package of 1Gbps - other slower speeds would obviously be cheaper.

The faster you want your connection the more you would pay. The top speed on BT Infinity at the moment is 40MBps.

You are correct Ryan but lets look at this another way.

Mum Dad and a couple of children who may be on low incomes as a family will have to contribute £760 in taxes - send straight to Jersey telecomms do not pass go.

Ninteen million divided by " all " members of the population including babies equates to £190 for every man woman and child.

Then the excellent point raised is that many familys cannot afford the £60 a month so this is again starting to look like a stealth tax to support the finance industry and wealthy, paid for by a large part of the population that will never use it because they are to young to old, working to send money home or simply not earning enough, and the free wireless cafe will do nicely.

It isn't a £19m lump sum though - it is £10m up front plus three years of JT not paying the States a dividend.

Also - the network has to be made available to ALL telecom operators in Jersey - so when they launch the trial this year it won't just be open to JT customers, it will be open to JT, Sure and Newtel customers as well.

And in the new year JT is going to lose the exclusivity over landlines - all operators will be able to offer landlines taking away a guaranteed income.

it will cost £60 - £70 per month.

Some mistake, surely? I'm with Virgin Broadband in the UK and pay 35 per month for 30Mb broadband, my landline (free evening and weekend calls), plus the TV. Lack of competition or summat.

Rob - did you read my previous comment? The £60 would be for the biggest 1Gbps package - that is 35 times faster than the connection you have.

Also - you can decide between Sure, Newtel or JT for your broadband and from the new year you will also be able to decide which company you want your home phone service from.

I just looked at the JT link and my jaw dropped. '£49.99 a month' for 20Mb! Are BTInfinity in Jersey already?

I pay £35 a month for 20mb and when Fibre launches that same 20mb is likely to become the lowest speed - which is currently priced at £11.99 a month with Sure.

Is that with BT Infinity? I need to get my elderly parents sorted out the Broadband in Jersey and don't know what the options are. They have Sky TV so I'm guessing they could get Sky Broadband also?

Apart from the cost issue. When exactly are they going to supply existing households with the new fibre-optic lines?
Is it going to be a case of serving all the business customers, then the new luxury developments, and maybe eventually get round to long-standing customers?
Their works programme should have been published before any funds were made available.

Rob you can't get BT or Sky broadband over here.
The choices are JT, Newtel Solutions or Sure, personally I'd avoid JT they're the most expensive of the 3 and have download limits.

As i stated in the begining ozouf said EVERYBODY will have the superfast internet.
Only the rich and companies will be able to have it. ozouf painted a pretty picture as he always does then you find out the truth after he has gone and given away our taxes so that the few get the super fast.

I think you are right about the rather misleading statement that every household will have it.  They most certainly wont.  It is not a bad idea overall, but the apportionment of benefits and costs are skewed, as so often happens locally.  The most likely result will a digitally divided society and a widening of the chasm between the haves and have nots of our society.

Exactly my point!
Peole really need to listen at what ozouf says and read between the lines. Most of the time he really is only talking to the rich but he has this way of you thinking it is you as well. Do not be fooled wise up to him. It is a pity that Gorst has to have him as the treasury minister. Perhaps he could do a Syvret on him if he say or gets just one little thing wrong to have a vote on no confidence against him. In which case we would see a CM with B**Ls and a strong States. The peoples States.
