Population
« on: December 08, 2011, 10:28:25 AM »
According to the JEP the population has risen by 9100

"JERSEY’S population now stands at 97,857 – the largest decade rise in 170 years. Following months of speculation, it was this morning confirmed that the number of people living in Jersey has increased by ten per cent or 9,100 since the last Census was carried out in 2001.

It also revealed that 48,296 of Islanders are male and 49,561 are female. The number of Islanders who have reached retirement age – over 59 for men and 64 for women – stands at 17,291.

Full story in Thursday’s JEP"

But CTV have a increase of 10,671

So who's right? Also I didn't know that men could retire at 59 and women at 64

I notice the JEP have removed the retirement age part, Is it really that hard for so-called professional journalists to check what they write before publishing?

The discrepancy between the JEP's report and CTV's is down to the inclusion/exclusion of the "undercount".

The part about retirement age is taken directly from the Census report (59 for Women - I'm not sure where 59 for Men was reported?)

Also, the decade from the 50's to the 60's saw a 16% increase in the population (compared to the 12% this time).

Better to look at the report yourself rather than rely on the reporting:

http://www.gov.je/SiteCollectionDocuments/Government%20and%20administration/R%20CensusBulletin1%2020111208%20SU.pdf

Finally, Jersey's population density is now 819 people/km2, Guernsey is 843p/km2. (Guernsey figures taken from CIA World Factbook)

I copied the 59 for men and 64 for women from the JEP website this morning.

They hadn't published the report when I posted this morning so I could only take the available information from CTV and the JEP

Jersey used to have 12,000 Portuguese according to Jerseys' authorities, until the ambassador visited and  stated that  he was pleased to see that  19,000 Portuguese  people had found work here and contributed to Jerseys success.

Was this true ? Why the difference? Immigrant workers have no interest in filling in forms. It therefore follows that the figures published are a snapshot and the figure must be higher.

The figure probably is a fair bit higher, I remember it being said a couple of years ago that the Polish community over here was 10,000 and the majority of them have arrived since the 2001 census,

I would have thought the true figure is closer to 104 - 106,000

Also the true unemployed figure is lot higher than just those who are registered with social security, so in reality the unemployment figure today would be around 3,000

The spin has started at 1 (insert as many noughts as you can) rpm but don't worry too much because a lot of the influx could be due to people coming back to Jersey for retirement. Yeah right...what aboout offsetting that tidy remark against the people who leave Jersey to retire. I would suggest at the least they cancel each other out. I pity the fool.

What genius figured out that the increased population might be due to immigration?
And how much was he/she/they paid to come up with that revelation?

Seems like our new Chief Minister has no backbone to deal with immigration.Saw Gorst on TV going on about people from Jersey who have moved back to the island. Why can't he say what everyone else knows just by living here, that the island is flooded with cheap labour from East Europe. Its powerful business leaders who run this island not the States. If a small local business wants to employ just one extra non-qualified person what a nightmare of bureacracy that is but if your a major retailer, construction company or fulfilment business its no problem, how many hundred would you like? There is never any thought to quality of life or a creaking infrastructure and rise in crime, its just about profit for big companies paying lots of people minimum wage.

The odd thing Gorst said was that not only people "coming back to Jersey for retirement" but coming back from university. Only recently there was research being carried out why students didn't return to the island !

Walker, Ozouf, Le Suer - The buck stops with them

Remember when Ozouf was economic development it was growth, growth, growth

Running at 7-8%

Failed policies coming back to haunt our Island - but the Zombies still follow him. He even got back in at Treasury - and now a new finance district.

Laugh - we should be crying  - matron bring me the drugs

So they are going ahead with the finance quarter no doubt there will be underground parking for the workers but no underground parking for the people who live in town with the new park which should have had parking under it. Just think they do not give a dam about the people who have to live with no parking in town but yet again finance must have everything. They should have let the Clark building be done in Broad street etc, no cost to us and the green looking car park on the esplanade still there where it should be.
Still the members wanted ozouf to carry on being treasury so you get what you asked for. The next elections cannot come around soon enough.

Jerry is a member of pj and I hope he does not mind me using his research published elsewere to make a point. His statement shows that again the States of Jersey are dumbing down the real unemployment figures.

17Jerry Gosselin

December 8, 2011 at 1:57 pm

Although it has not been reported here, today’s release also included the official figure for the number of unemployed Jersey residents on census night, which is far more accurate than the monthly Social Security figures because it includes EVERYONE who is looking for a job, whether they are registered as unemployed or not.

The figure for 2011 is: 2,569;

The equivalent figure in 2001 was 1,020.

To put this in perspective, the official March 2011 unemployment figure released by the Statistics Unit was 1,310 so the real figure (census) is almost double the official monthly figure. Once LVCR is abolished next April, the REAL figure will almost definitely exceed 3,000, with the official figure probably touching 2,000.

However, it is not immediately clear how students have been counted in the census, as the truth is that many of them would also be unemployed if the States weren’t paying to keep them on courses at Highlands.
