Are Jersey dentists a rip off ?
« on: December 08, 2011, 09:59:18 AM »
JEP

ISLANDERS could get more help from the States to pay high dental charges.
The cost of going to the dentist will form part of a major review commissioned by the new Social Security Minister, Francis Le Gresley. The move follows the decision yesterday by Senator Alan Breckon to withdraw plans for a £1 million States-funded mobile dental scheme

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The business acumen is sadly lacking in whoever thought up this proposal. The only way to bring dentists prices down is to increase supply to meet demand.

Why Jersey is happy to allow low paid workers in who may or may or may not contribute tax but nerveless do a job of work but then the States  refuse to allow in more outside qualified dentists wanting to set up shop smacks of protectionism. The idea of a states mobile dentist to deal with demand,  properly  costed, even put out to tender,  is a far better idea forcing down prices as there would be fewer customers for very  expensive dentists. Fewer customers mean cheaper prices, ask the shops in the high street, it is not rocket science.

Under the latest proposal  dentists just  get paid more helped by public taxes.

Completely the wrong approach and the same mentality as paying civil servants tens of thousands to leave their jobs early.

I have my dentistry work done in the UK which is a third of the price.

I would say dentists are a complete rip off over here and some are complete cowboys, who if we had decent legislation wouldn't be allowed to practice.

Was thinking of going to Goa.  Friends go there and have there teeth done without any bother.  I went to the dentist very recently and was charged over £100 for a wash, polish and brush up which entailed just smoothing off a few chips and taking X-rays.  They say that the X-rays are used as a preventative measure.

Hey Ho you pays your  money and you takes your choice :(

A nice holiday in GOA,(All inclusive), for a few weeks and having your teeth done whilst you are there is far cheaper than a few visits to a local dentist.

my wife got her 6 implants there( goa) and other bridgework, i have a crown on top of a jersey rootcanal treatment .
to say the least  that here in jersey  my wife  would  not have  inplants , too costly. quite true fritz. do you  know  anil da silva in porverim ?
loads of westerners can be found in his dentists chair , as for  xrays , the xrayman  behind  campal military hospital in panjim is first class , the clearest opg  going , and at £8.00, good value for money, mri scans  are cheap , and  the well person(all affordable ) full medicals at various  medical hospitals  are good ,  to see a specialist  is easy ,  sadly i could not afford this years trip , due to massive hike in the cost of living on this rock.
indias visa fees are a bit of a rip off, if they did  1month for say£10, it would boost tourism , imo.

One route canal filling with crown and three small fillings £1,400. In the chair for 2.5 hours, not a bad hourly rate. Most people earn less than £ 500 per week.

Worth noting that it only takes about 18-24 months to qualify to be a dentist. Maybe Highlands should get organised and turn all our unemployed youth into millionaires in the next five years.

I can remember once, many moons ago now getting so angry in the Dentists chair I nearly walked out.  The silly man was talking about another patient and how stupid they were, even naming them. No joke I was seething but couldn't say anything because my mouth was full of instruments.  Not often I am shut up but I was that time.  I never went back there again.  He rang me to ask why I wasn't carrying on with the plan of action.  I just said I didn't want to go back.  I decided not to explain why because I would have lost my temper and probably would have let myself down.

The silly man had also started route canal treatment without telling me he was going to do it and I didn't want to go down that route *funny ha ha* because of other health issues.  So I was landed with a treatment I didn't want that made the other health issue worse.  What a bombastic twit he was!

Well at least I still have my own teeth which I think is an achievement but for how long, even though my smile looks like a bag of chips?  Everything is either dropping off or crumpling at the moment.  I have banned mirrors in my house.

He He!  Cali  8)

Where did you get that information from?

I think it is more like 5 to 7 years, depending on what degrees you already have:

Dental hygienist could be about 2 years:

Jimmy Cagney qualified in less than two years.
