That is good news en830 however lets remember the Jersey Government tax and spend mentality. In 2010 the figures show that there was an increase in States 58 senior managers.

Of the reputed 700 shortly going to be out of work obviously many will leave Jersey this means  GST lost on food and services, social security payments lost, rent for lodgings which the tax man gets a chunk gone, bus fares paid lost etc.

Not good.

Time to tell England to get off of our tail! They should get their own house in order first.

I hardly think trying to start a trade war with the UK is a good idea.We would have more to lose than them and we would lose.
With the amount of negative stories about tax havens in the national press i don't think it would take much for them to turn their guns on our finance industry to keep a few more quid on their home turf.

THE reasons behind scrapping the relief that currently allows items under £15 to be sent from the Channel Islands free of VAT have been outlined by HM Treasury.

Channel Island case against LVCR change 'has no chance'

Story here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-jersey-16290168

I think Richard Allen is correct, and this legal challenge will just be another waste of cash.

Have I misunderstood?  It seems to me both Jersey and Guernsey are mounting a legal challenge to the change.  Since the action has to happen in the UK,and the grounds surely are identical for both islands it seems a waste of funds to duplicate effort. The only logic in doing so would be if the case is expected to fail. Each government has to be seen to be trying to do something about a lost cause.  In the worst case Guernsey get a reprieve while Jersey does not .  Sounds implausible? Something very similar has just happened with university education fees.

could not a" commoner" take the uk goverment to court , and have a mackenzie friend  assist with the trial?
the industry in question should fund its battle to survive, with its own  purse not he taxpayers .  the high street as we know it  will have less trade as  the internet becomes , the shop window .

it would be interesting to know the value of the tax take  of  fulfilment  makes the taxpayer, against any income support paid to the  people  working in it.

Is this joined up thinking or Jersey just being flash with taxpayers money ..................again ?

GUERNSEY could end up spending more than has been stated to challenge the UK’s decision to scrap VAT relief on low value goods exported from the island.

Jersey’s economic development minister, Senator Alan Maclean (pictured), yesterday revealed that his department had budgeted £360,000 for its challenge, planned to run in parallel to Guernsey’s.

In contrast, Guernsey has budgeted between £50,000 and £60,000 to seek a judicial review on the grounds that the withdrawal of low value consignment relief was discriminatory.

The Policy Council declined to comment on the funding gap.

There might be a way for us to get around the LCVR being abolished - another thread was started about this today.
