It is often whispered on the chattering classes supper circuit that Philip Bailhache is a difficult man to work with. Sir Peter Crill, when he was alive, was oft exasperated by the behaviour of his successor and that became even more pronounced after his retirement (especially in relation to the overtly politically bias he regularly displayed).  Peter felt it brought great shame on the proud office of Bailiff.

It is also known that privately Michael Birt is 'irritated' by his pre-decessor's decision to stand for Senator - aware that there is now great potential for him to be undermined when in the chair.

Gerry, I refer to your attempts to unmask a poster on this thread!

Your less than subtle attempt to demask a poster is reprehensible and does this forum an injustice.  Is there no honour!  I am disappointed as I take your former posts as genuine and up for debate.

Hi man on the street.I have to say that the question of spoilt papers is really bugging me.Can anyone supply a list?I would like to find out why there was so many purely out of interest. Was it to do with using pen or pencil/deleting the polling no on the back, ticking off candidates and then crossing the rest off.We have a right to know why these papers are spoilt so that any genuine voter can correct it next time.

There are several witnesses to the count so if there was something drastically wrong regarding spoilt papers I think it would come out.
Many years ago I voted for Jimmy Perchard and Bob Hill thus spoiling my paper, but I can say I voted for them, I had the only spoilt paper in St Martin, since then there have been I think at least 7, not sure how many this time. I think the rise in umber is just voters voicing their dissatisfaction, nothing more.

why the polling number on the back is needed i do not know , at st clements there was both pens and pencils in the booths.
i have never seen a example of a correctly filled out voting slip  at the polling station, but i am not saying they never did exist.

The lady who gave me my slip when I asked replied "yes a cross like a kiss, so put your kiss where you want" so I gave Deidre a kiss.

The worst thing you can do is rip it in half and only put half in, they spend ages looking for the other half.

Hi Dundee,I am not saying that there is anything wrong with the count. You say that if there was something drastically wrong regarding spoilt papers it would come out.Why would it if we are not allowed to know how the paper's are spoilt. If the rise in numbers is due to just voter dissatisfaction then that's fine, but it would still be interesting  to find out if that was the case

I can never remember if it is a tick or a cross and normally there is a notice in the voting kiosk to remind me. This time there was none in the ones ( St Helier 2 ) When I went to ask the assistant she said cross before I even asked as she had been asked so many times. A silly but important mistake and many must have been confused and spoiled their paper

Each candidate is allowed to nominate a witness to the count, so if there was something out of the ordinary then I would have thought someone would have commented. Given that many found the standard of those standing in the senatorial not very good in that it was difficult to nominate four, it is perhaps not surprising there are a number of spoilt papers. Also the anti establishment representative had lost the support of many of those that would have usually voted for him.
