Moving Forward
« on: March 25, 2008, 12:23:03 PM »
For those who would be interested, there is going to be a public meeting in April about forming a new group with the aim of bringing people together, regardless of there political beliefs, to discuss ways of bringing reform to our current political sysytem, amending  government policies that the people of Jersey feel need to be updated and talk about policies that they believe need to be created. To those who maybe concerned, I can confirm that this will not be an event staged by the JDA and is open to anyone. From reading comments, posts and articles across various types of media there seems to be a number of people who would like to see changes made. Please forward this message to anyone who you believe might be interested in being a part of this group.I believe if we,as an island, work together we can make a difference at this years elections.

Thankyou,

It may well only be lefties, but if you don't try you don't know.
If you don't have hope what else is there.
A lot of people seem to be doing a lot of complaining but no one is actually doing anything. In the future I will Know I have tried whatever happens.

Fo those who wish to know why I am trying to do this.

I use to work in the finance industry but felt that for me personally it was not rewarding and so after travelling for 2 years I spent sometime volunteering with the youth service.
After being back in the island a year I left my postion in the bank and became a support worker at a charity that provides support and accomodation for people with learning difficulties I also still volunteer for Jersey Autism on my weekends off for a few hours.
I would like to state that I am not a memeber of the JDA and have nothing against the finance industry, infact many people who work in that industry do a lot for the community its just that I belieive  GST is not fair a deal for everyone.
Some of my other reasons for doing this are;

Where is the skatepark for the kids and the town park that was to be built ?
Why is there people with learning difficilties struggling to find work experience when they want it.
Why are the states not funding respite services ?
Why are people not voting ?
Why is there a herion problem on the island ?( I am 25 and through school and where I grew up, know of 2 people that have died through taking herion)
Why is it that during the last 2 major football tournments there has been trouble between sections of the Portuguese and Jersey/English community?
Yes criminal acts have been reduced in town over weekends but this is beacuse of increased police presence, which the police admits means there day time numbers have been reduced.
As far as I can see there are problems with the society I live in and that is all of our problem and therefore our governments problem also.

Fair play to you for organising this, but I actually reckon only lefties will turn up.

They will if everyone takes that attitude. If you're not a lefty and you turn up, it will tip the balance. So turn up.

And honestly, what does it matter if they are all lefties? I hate lefties, but let's be realistic here. What's the alternative? Another 3 - 6 years of Walker and his cronies ruling the roost?  If you think this first term of ministerial government has been bad, wait and see how much worse it gets if nobody attempts to make a difference just because they don't like lefties.

We've already given the Council of Ministers an inch, and they've take a mile. If there's no loud public voice for change, they'll take 10 miles over the next term.  Frank Walker is already on record, filmed by French TV a couple of weeks ago, as saying that the public of Jersey do not want change. Are you gonna sit there and take that arrogant insult?

Sometimes you have to bite the bullet for the greater good.

I was one of the people that set up a group on Face book and I also spoke at the rally. I am also the person who is trying to set up the public meeting about moving forward. I repeat I am not a member of the JDA.I copy below what I said at the rally, for me it was a sucess. I went from sending a message to 15 people expressing how I felt to speaking to a few hundred people.

I would like to start by thanking everyone for showing there support to those that have suffered abuse and therefore neglect, by the people and institutions who were responsible for there care & well being. I felt that there had been too many peoples lives affected by this to stand back and do nothing.

In the corporate world those in charge are held accountable for the mistakes made by people they are responsible for and I feel it should be the same in our political system.

I believe the way certain members of our government, and our First Minister have represented us since the police investigation has become public knowledge, has been unacceptable.

Sadly there are many issues that have contributed to the problems we currently face on this island, but I am not here to talk about them today.

I will be honest and say that before now I have not been registered to vote. This is because I felt it would not make a difference. However, to go from setting up a group on face book last Friday morning to being here today has shown me we can come together as individuals, and make a difference if we choose to.

I now believe that as we did during the occupation, we can unite as a community - regardless of age, race or social status- to make real and lasting changes, helping to make this island we all love, a better place to live and work for everyone.

In the future I will be voting,
for who, as yet I do not know.

If this is a JDA event, why have I asked Daruis Pearce to speak at the meeting ? and I will repeat what I said in my first post, this meeting is open to anyone and everyone.
I will be honest and say I have spoken to people who are in the JDA, but that is because I am willing to work with anyone who wants to try and make a difference regardless of there political philosophy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear sirs/Madam,

I alongside a few other people are trying to organise a public meeting in April about forming a new group with the aim of bringing people together, regardless of there political beliefs, to discuss reforms they would like to see in there political system and ideas they have about government policies they  feel need to be changed or updated. This group at present is not connected to any political group or politician.
I am writing to you, to see if you would be willing to come along and speak at the meeting about your views and to listen to members of the public. So far many of the people who have shown an interest in this meeting have not voted before including myself.

The objective of the meeting  is to give people who are elected and who plan to stand at the next elections an opportunity to explain to people who may not have voted what there manifesto is.
It will also give the public a chance to express how they feel and explain some of the changes they would like to see.It will also give them an opportunity to meet and listen to those candidates who are planning to stand, and therefore make their own informed decision as to whether they would prefer to back an individual candidate or someone who is in a party.
If a group is created the objective would be to encourage people to vote, promoting new candidates to stand, again whether they stand as individuals or in a existing political party.

I understand you do not know who I am or my motives behind what I am doing, so I feel I should explain a little about myself. I am 25 years old and have been working as a support worker for a charity that provides support and accomadation for people with Learning difficulties for the last 18 months. I currently volunteer as a befriender on my weekend off for Jersey Autisim and have previously done work with the youth service,I have worked in the finance industry before and know the important part it plays in the Jersey economy. I have not voted before, but through the above activities and talking to people I know, believe things could be better.
I feel that unless more people get involved in local politics and start voting this will not happen and so that it why I have asked Various current politicians to speak.
Untill I released the information saying I had invited people to speak who are not in the JDA, most people were saying it was a JDA event. If I had not invited any politicans people would have said it was just a bunch of amatuers, I cant win.
I would also like to state that I did not plan the rally in the square, I just set up one of the groups on facebook and used it to spread information and so was asked to speak and said yes. I am not planning to hold the meeting in the square and will have conformation of the venue soon.
At the moment I am pretty much doing this by myself and I am happy to admit I know I need help but if it fails it will not be my failure, it willl be the failure of those who quite obviously are intelligent and understand the problems the island faces but are not willing to work together to try and tackle these problems.I will be able to walk away knowing I tried. More then anything I just want people to vote for the right people.

You pro and anti JDA will like this one, Geff Southern has also said he would attend.

I do not claim to have the answers to the problems we face, I am just trying to create an oppurtunity for people to get together who feel they do with those who would be willing to support them.

Darius Pearce has now also said he would attend.
So do you think it would be better to give these people(Darius Pearce, Geoff Southern, Paul Le Claire, Len Norman and maybe Alan Breckon) a chance to speak about thier views and allow members of the public to question them and then make there own decisions or contact them all and say sorry the public don't want you to attend.
please pm me with your opinion.

I personally think it's a good idea to invite current politicians as some of them will be re-standing and representing us in the coming years

If I were to be honest, only Darius Pearce, and that is purely because he is not a member of Government.

Let us be realistic, the others are on £45K a year + benefits for doing sod all.

Say if you really want a balance and even a JDA member there invite a non elect.

The only way forward has to be done by people who are not already in Government.

From the small article in tonights JEP, it looks like Darius may not be able to attend the meeting. See page 4 bottom of the page.
