Statistics update.
« on: September 28, 2011, 08:48:22 PM »
These are some of the Stats  for this year. You will notice that the membership figure is wrong. This is because six weeks ago planet jersey was attacked by robots but stopped at the door by Admin.

For reasons unknown at this time, the software has logged them as members which they are obviously not. Members and guests looking in early am based in Jersey, will notice people on line. These are guests / members from different time zones ie different countries.

I agree, long live planetjersey but I think I will have to cut down on my postings.  I am spending too much time on the internet.  Good job I get up early I can get most of my input done then.  Good Stats, shame about the robot attacks isn't there a decent security around to deal with that or is it too expensive.

Upwards and onwards for planetjersey.  Maybe PJ should find and introduce some lively topics to discuss now election fever is over.

Good Stats, shame about the robot attacks isn't there a decent security around to deal with that or is it too expensive.
Because this is a public web site, it can be accessed by any other computer on the internet.

There are benign robots and malign robots. The benign ones are the web search indexers that crawl your site so that it can appear on a search - Bing, Google, etc. We want these.

The malign ones are used by spammers, hackers, and other destructive types. They crawl the web looking for sites with known vulnerabilities and then they exploit them to spread spam and viruses, or merely to destroy your site.

Both types of robots will appear as 'guests' in the stats and there is nothing we can do to stop that other than make the site members only, so that 'guests' cannot access it. We don't want to do that.

Occasionally I block whole ranges of IP addresses. The other day I did Ukraine, Pakistan, and most of China, on the basis that I would guess 100% of the requests originating from those locations are not individuals interested in who won the recent elections or what Frank Walker said to Stuart Syvret in 2008.

When I took over the admin of this site, were getting hundreds of spurious accounts being registered by robots. One day we had an attack and they registered, literally, several thousand accounts within the space of about 30 minutes. Anyway, I wrote my own modifications to the forum source code and since then we have had zero false registrations. So we seem, for the time being to have got rid of the false registrations but we have to put up with the 'rogue guests' - sort of like my house at the weekend really.

Thanks for the thorough explanation it was interesting and I now understand why you need to allow the good robots to do their work.  I hope you only have good rogues visiting your home though - don't want anyone stamping out ciggies on your carpet.

These figures indicate that PJ had it’s best year ever by a very small margin. In 2009 there were a hand full of sites now there are over twenty so this forum  has done exceedingly well.

Please tell like minded friends about PJ to strengthen and build on its membership. Planetjersey is still the only unedited free expression forum serving Jersey. 2012 will see removal of some unpopular threads with less than 500 visits and older than two years in order to tidy up the forum.

The massive topics menu could do with a bit of pruning.
IE: All politicians names etc.
Keep up the good work.
