Deputy Paul Le Claire

Now nobody has really spoken about this minister and I caught this bit of recent news and wondered when he had joined the Bailiff bandwagon?

Should the Bailiff be head of the States and the courts? A Deputy's asking for an investigation into the dual role. The Bailiff's involved in helping to make the laws and enforcing them. Deputy Paul Le Claire says this can be seen as a conflict of interest. Neither the Bailiff or Deputy Bailiff are elected. Deputy Le Claire thinks this should change.

How do you rate Paul Le Claire?

I have encountered this 'honourable member' personally on many occasions and I really don't like him - how somebody of his limited capacity, intellect and life experience ever made it into the States completely escapes me... Were the limited number of the electorate who turned out to vote him in under the influence of hypnosis or drugs?!?!

But expressing personal predjuce is not the same as backing an opinion with evidence...so from the States sitting on 26th February, Frank Walker's Statement on Haut de la Garenne (http://www.statesassembly.gov.je/frame.asp then go to 'Hansard', then go to the relevant date) we have "Will the Chief Minister be attending this evening the service at Gouray Church that the Dean has so wisely made available for States Members and members of the public to express our prayers and our wishes for peace and the healing that is required in this Island.", a nice, tame, smug, greasy 'feeder' question, and then, towards the end of the Questions, 'I am sure I and other Members are greatly appreciative of the statement this morning from the Chief Minister.  Perhaps it might be an idea, under the current circumstances, given the dark cloud which hangs over Jersey at this time as stated by the Chief Minister, if it were possible for the States Members to sign up to this statement in some way physically in a declaration to show that we are united in supporting the emphasis of this statement and all that it means to demonstrate to the people of Jersey and the world that this Government is 100 per cent, as individual politicians, behind these investigations and leaving no stone unturned.' to which Frank responded 'I think that is an extremely helpful suggestion and I warmly thank the Deputy for making it.  It would clearly be a decision for each individual States Member whether or not they wished to sign the statement and indicate their support but, providing there are no rules to prevent it and I cannot think of why there should be, I will, through the Greffe, make a copy of the statement available in the Members’ room and invite all Members who may wish to do so to sign to signify their support for the approach that we are taking in dealing with this horrendous issue.'....a sycophantic display which sickened me for it's ingratiation and smarm.

(However, whilst I have the States minutes open...let's not forget;

"4.5 The Deputy of St. John (Andrew Lewis):
Could I first begin by congratulating the Chief Minister on the superb way he has dealt with the media frenzy in the last couple of days.  Will he be taking exception with the B.B.C. (British Broadcasting Corporation) over the technique that Jeremy Paxman used last night - the very biased technique he used - in interviewing the Chief Minister last night?  Will he be taking this up with the B.B.C.?

As a display of fawning adulation, this was admirable, but he was too soon out of the blocks and soon passed by others starting behind him. Still very worthy of an honourable mention tho', and not being forgotten.).

Is this the same Paul Le Claire that was backingand fully in support of  a certain Mr Broken's plans for hotel conversion to a private hospital ,using tax payers money to subsidise a facility which would not have benefited the majority of the population of Jersey ?

I think he is nothing but a dead duck.  Not done a thing since last elected.  Time to go.

Yes indeed he was, his heart is in the right place and his voting record speaks for itself he generally casts his vote in the Chamber in the exact same way I would. He works closely with Duhamel and Crowcroft on the Environment Scrutiny Panel.

I agree he goes off half cocked when he sees a bandwagon sometimes (e.g. over independence for Jersey) without really thinking through the consequences of what such a thing would entail.

Still he would get my vote as a genuine person with his heart in the right place. Expect Al and the rest of the JDA to make personal attacks on him though as he pulled out of the JDA once Geoff Southern was made head honcho.

Oops, I speak to soon. He has got a letter on seat belts in the local rag tonight, and quote:
"Last of all, had this not been so well covered by the JEP, it may never have gained so much of the necessary support among my colleagues in the States".
