Cohen standing for election
http://www.freddiecohen.com/It has been a great honour to serve the Island as a Senator and a Minister from 2005 and I am now seeking re-election to continue my work to improve the standing of the Island and the wellbeing, welfare and prosperity of Islanders
Earlier this year I indicated that I may not seek re-election in this year's Senatorial elections. My thoughts at the time were influenced by several factors including: threatening letters and telephone calls, misleading reporting of planning matters and the resultant effect on my family.
Together with my family I have now come to the realisation that no one should be intimidated by the unrepresentative views of a minority and I have therefore decided to stand for re-election.
After the success of the Island Plan, I stood down as Planning Minister - a post which has often been likened to receiving a poisoned chalice and a post which I'd held for nearly six years.
In the last few months, I have been assisting Chief Minister Terry Le Sueur in raising Jersey's profile at Westminster, Brussels and overseas. It has become clear how important overseas representation is to ensure the continued economic success of the Island and consequentially our ability to deliver high quality public services and properly care for Islanders. Other jurisdictions have mixed views of Jersey and its financial services industry and we need to set the record straight and promote ourselves against stiff competition from other jurisdictions. We need to bring business and jobs to Jersey before our competitors beat us to it.
I have had significant success in this work, notably in achieving support in principle from the UK Treasury for our tax regime, developing significant opportunities for our dairy industry in China and delivering real job opportunities for Islanders through international partnerships, and as a result I would like to continue. I have also received many encouraging letters, calls and emails requesting that I stand for re-election to continue my work in foreign affairs from both States members and the public.
I have nearly six years of ministerial experience and feel I have much to deliver if elected to serve a second term. I will focus my efforts on improving the standing of Jersey, creating opportunities and jobs for Islanders and delivering better public services.
I will promote new areas of modern enterprise, including IT and environmental technologies and endeavour to contribute to delivering a diverse and secure economy to ensure that Islanders benefit individually from these new opportunities.
I am privileged to have a wonderful family and they are all now fully supportive of my decision to seek re-election.
