An excellent comment by Paula Thelwell, I do like her open attitude, which in this case reflects the views of many islanders.

JEP.

The redevelopment of the old holiday camp at Portelet is a prime example from which to learn that even when the final whistle has been blown, the rules allow for a period of extra time during which revisions may be submitted. As so often happens, those who thought the game was over find that they have been bowled out by a googlie.

The problem is that the planning process isn’t a game, as there is far more at stake that scoring points. Just because plans have been approved, it does not mean that the applicant cannot make drastic changes, as happened with Portelet.

Because of a more ‘relaxed’ consideration of applications of late in the countryside and on the coastal fringes, houses are being built that sit incongruently with the surrounding area.

Whatever happened, I increasingly ask myself, to the principles of only allowing new buildings, on a previously developed site in the countryside and green zones, to be no more than ten per cent bigger that the original footprint, and also considering the impact of the development on the immediate area?

I need look no further than my own environs to realise that neither of these once crucial planning considerations plays any significant part in the current application process.
The consequences are plain to see. Country mansions and faux grand designs are popping up in the most inappropriate locations – usually with state-of-the-art security systems totally out of proportion to the safe society in which we are blessed to live – and illuminated at night like some national monument.

Just like the Queen, and don't even have to be in the Goverment
Now how did that happen? Do you have the nessary C.D or qualifications
for this job? or are we again doing it The Jersey Way?

I would like to see a petition asking people to sign against Cohen being made Foreign Minister if he is not in the States come October. This really does go to show just what this establishment party think of the ordinary people of Jersey.

I have said that Senator Cohen will stand in the forthcoming elections and I have no reason to change that view. At this moment in time he is an elected representative for the people of Jersey and is entitled to speak on behalf of this island.

Should he actually decide not to stand or not get voted in, then Philip Ozouf and other close friends on the CoM could invent another post called ambassador for Jersey.

This  would smack of nepotism, favouritism and misuse of taxpayers money, to place someone who is outside of the Government for at least two valid reasons. Obviously not elected by the people to speak for the people of Jersey, and there is the problem if this job were invented what becomes the post of Foreign Minister now it actually exists, and is filled within Government ?

Could it be that the position of  Minister for Economics’ is now to be replaced by a special economics consultant or  Minister for Transport is usurped by  a new invented non  elected  supreme transport guru. It doesn’t really work and attacks the structure of democratic Government.

There was an uproar when Sir Phillip Bailhache gave his Liberation day speech, assuming to speak for all of Jersey.

Any person becoming Foreign Minister or any other Minister, must be elected by the people at the ballot box to represent Jersey in my opinion

The Ball

From Bruce Willing.

Far from damage, Senator Cohen has improved the built environment through actively encouraging good design, both through our local architects and by encouraging internationally recognised architects to design buildings in Jersey.

The Bat

Mr Willing was Cohens campaign manager when he last got elected. One of the G & T coctail-diner party set. I am not surprised that he tries and defend the indefensible .
Cohens rule at Planning was a disaster, it represented everything bad about Ministerial government. An out of touch minister, with huge powers making off the wall decisions .

So.

How stupid ( or desperate ) to write a letter when you were campaign manager  ( if joel is correct ), how brown nosed, and of course let us be honest,  Senator Cohen would never of dreamed of  communicating with his old campaign manager and asking him to write a very detailed letter to the JEP with all that up to date information.

The ball the bat and out for six I think we could say.

Cohen standing for election

http://www.freddiecohen.com/

It has been a great honour to serve the Island as a Senator and a Minister from 2005 and I am now seeking re-election to continue my work to improve the standing of the Island and the wellbeing, welfare and prosperity of Islanders

Earlier this year I indicated that I may not seek re-election in this year's Senatorial elections. My thoughts at the time were influenced by several factors including: threatening letters and telephone calls, misleading reporting of planning matters and the resultant effect on my family.

Together with my family I have now come to the realisation that no one should be intimidated by the unrepresentative views of a minority and I have therefore decided to stand for re-election.

After the success of the Island Plan, I stood down as Planning Minister - a post which has often been likened to receiving a poisoned chalice and a post which I'd held for nearly six years.

In the last few months, I have been assisting Chief Minister Terry Le Sueur in raising Jersey's profile at Westminster, Brussels and overseas. It has become clear how important overseas representation is to ensure the continued economic success of the Island and consequentially our ability to deliver high quality public services and properly care for Islanders. Other jurisdictions have mixed views of Jersey and its financial services industry and we need to set the record straight and promote ourselves against stiff competition from other jurisdictions. We need to bring business and jobs to Jersey before our competitors beat us to it.

I have had significant success in this work, notably in achieving support in principle from the UK Treasury for our tax regime, developing significant opportunities for our dairy industry in China and delivering real job opportunities for Islanders through international partnerships, and as a result I would like to continue. I have also received many encouraging letters, calls and emails requesting that I stand for re-election to continue my work in foreign affairs from both States members and the public.

I have nearly six years of ministerial experience and feel I have much to deliver if elected to serve a second term. I will focus my efforts on improving the standing of Jersey, creating opportunities and jobs for Islanders and delivering better public services.
I will promote new areas of modern enterprise, including IT and environmental technologies and endeavour to contribute to delivering a diverse and secure economy to ensure that Islanders benefit individually from these new opportunities.

I am privileged to have a wonderful family and they are all now fully supportive of my decision to seek re-election.

Hmm not much there about the environment from the minister for planning and environment. I don't think he will like my election leaflet one little bit. My mind keeps recalling Shakespeare - Cry 'Havoc,' and let slip the dogs of war that this foul deed shall smell above the earth with carrion men, groaning for burial!

In the following statement Freddie tells us with a smile,

‘I have worked very hard and delivered novel policies ………………[lets not forget  planning decisions Freddie]

Well you have done the right thing Freddie, because the people will speak and speak loudly. As a voter may I ask one very simple question.

Where has the word planning gone even missing in the JEP report below.  Rob Duhamel who stepped into your shoes was called the E. Minister and not the P. Minister. Is this the best the Government spin doctors can come up ? Trying to get the islanders to forget the developments you allowed to deface  Jerseys coast and countryside

You were Planning Minister and Environmental Minister for five years, six months, even though one job conflicted with  the other and  even though you are on record as saying one person had to much power. You were right, but did not correct the imbalance why would you when you were having so much fun.

Roll on voting day, there are going to be burst balloons and tears.

JEP

AFTER weeks of speculation, Senator Freddie Cohen has announced that he will stand for re-election after all.
He says that he will not be intimidated by the ‘anonymous hate-mongers’ who threatened him and his family earlier this year in an anti-Semitic attack.

Senator Cohen (53) spent 5½ years as Environment Minister before stepping down from the role in the spring to focus on his new job as foreign minister.

On the eve of the deadline for candidates to put their name forward, he said: ‘I have worked very hard and delivered novel policies, ranging from Eco-Active and the Architecture Commission to agreement in principle on zero-ten, and I have a lot more to offer and want to give the electorate the opportunity to consider me.’

The Senator added that he would not be intimidated from standing after receiving anti-Semitic abuse and death threats earlier this year. Although a police investigation into the threats took place, no one was charged.

Truth is he has realised that the public will not have it with him running the world as Foreign Minister not being a States member. So hehas had to stand for election to get his lovely job. Only i think he may not get in.

Im loving the re-branding of Senator Cohen

You can just imagine what was going in the Ozouf Bunker with all the planners around the table and the hours spent on how to re-brand Senator Cohen to the electorate in 2011.

Get him to resign from planning after  5yrs of utter crap, forget all about the esplanade finance junk and so on and hey presto we have a foreign minister.

You just have to stand back and bloody laugh at what is being served up in this Island you really do.

7,000 turned out for line in the sand - if that lot vote him back in  really will be the cherry on the cake

Still, selling cow jizz and school twinning to the world has got to be better than shafting our headland

I would love it if the states member voted not to have freddie as foreign minister. Would freddie resign from the states if he is not made foreign minister?

While the main focus as stated is the UK, is there not a possibility that Jersey property could also be purchased and as is normal any property investment company purchasing  a number of new builds off plan would be entitled to a hefty discount ? This is of course would only happen  if planning permission is obtained in the first place. Does uncle Max  hold a Jersey Property portfolio, probably not ?

About Max.

The company’s strategy is to exploit the current cyclical weakness in the real estate market, in particular through opportunistic acquisitions, active asset management and judicious use of non-recourse finance to enhance shareholder returns. The focus will be on UK real estate assets and the intention is to seek out investments wherever and in whatever asset class the directors consider the best opportunities lie without specific restrictions on the size of a single investment, exposure to a specific asset class, or a particular type of tenant or geographical area.

He's had a new election campaign video made. No expense has been spared. It is, as you might expect, sponsored by Dandara.
