accomodation for sale / got to get out of rented part
« on: March 02, 2011, 07:29:04 PM »
help please. a mate of mine and his wife and child (all jersey born ) have rented a granny type flat  for a few years. and  now its for sale( within this accomodation they are underhoused).
they cannot afford private rents  and cannot get rent rebate and are waiting for housing to  house them. the landlord wants to evict.
things  are sounding to be come a bit ugly.
the attitude of one estate agent   stinks( must be desperate for the commision)
also the landlord  wants to give them( tenants) the costs of the eviction.
any help here , would be a godsend.
here's a thing if you could find a place for what housing  say the rent should be , they would not need the rent rebate that they cannot get.

Phone the JEC, they have loads of properties at aprox the same rents as States.

I,ve got a mate who lives in one of their flats. Places are lovely compared to some of the shit in the private sector and they are maintained regularly by JEC, painters, gardeners etc.

If the landlord wants to evict them surely housing are obliged to house them.  Happened to a family I knew.

housing  do not have any two bed at this time ,they will do in a few months.
how long ago  was your family in this situation?
the jersey family are not alone , i know of a couple ( localy born)who have been in a rented cottage  for twelve years ( they do not earn a fortune ) and cannot afford the now high rents, for a similar thing.

the jec homes are full and  have along waiting  list, so have most estate agents in the bracket they can afford,  reading between  the lines, it would seem that there  is  1000 in unsuitable  accomodation

Although I am unable to help it brings back painful memories and I feel for your friend
In the eighties when things were really tough regarding accomodation my wife and I +2 year old + 14 week old baby lived in a flat in town
It was mid February, freezing with snow. The arrogant landlord served us notice to quit within six weeks ( with notice from the viscount )  because he wanted to put one of his managers in. He behaved in such a incredibly bad way that when he took us to court even his own solicitor admitted it was awful to kick a young family out in mid winter. We didn't have to argue much as the petty debts magistrate was so disgusted he let us stay for 3 years without the landlord having the right to increase the rent !!! He tried several times and each time I told him to go to hell ! Never forgotten that ....
Just shows that one can fight back ! I wish your friend good luck

well there is light at the end of the tunnel, from the housing department , good for them , it may still take a month.
it would appear ,  that you cannot get legal aid  to fight eviction , so said one place, the batonier is handing over from ogiers to crill cavanan's , but the i's an t's are not dotted and crossed yet, so try both places if you require legal aid.
many thanks  for your support , for  this family, lets hope we can all keep a roof over our heads untill it is no longer required.
the need for afforable accomodation  is dire, and clearly more  rental(social housing) will be required.
what i would not like to see is buy to let landlords draining the purse of income support at a vast profit if unlet flats  stay empty.
i myself have paid over£100,000 in rent over  the last ten years, shame the right for states tenants
to buy was not around  when i moved into states rental, however some of my rent, went  to the fund  to refurb the outside of the home i live in.
states homes if built new will in the end pay for themselves.

My mate has informed me that the JEC are now renting out the flats and houses at the top of Queens Rd as , "Non-Quallies".
There cannot be much demand for 1/2 bed flats and 3 bed houses in the Qualified sector?

How much of the JEC is States owned?
Would they be renting to Non-Quallies if there was a real shortage of housing?

Sorry just noticed that Dandara are registered in the Isle of Man, can we assume they pay no tax on their profits in Jersey ? If this is the case then Jersey loses on two fronts, land and income, is this not completely mad ? If not rape of an islands limited resources ?
