From Encyclopædia Britannica:

The swastika as a symbol of prosperity and good fortune is widely distributed throughout the ancient and modern world. The word is derived from the Sanskrit svastika, meaning “conducive to well-being.”

Simply, it's a symbol I've seen in some fascinating places.

It is said that Sauvastika is the term used when the arms are bent to the left and when they are bent to the right the term Svastika is used.

There is a difference of opinion as to whether the meaning changes depending upon the way the arms of the symbol bend.  Evil to the left and health and harmony to the right.

The symbol has been used by many cultures though and it is a shame that the symbol of how the sun travels across the skies should have been used by an evil organisation in Europe, become banned in Germany and be viewed with hatred by so many people.

A symbol with a very interesting and varied history!

As an aside I never realised that George Eliot had visited Jersey!

Marx and Engels both visited more than once. Not very prominent in the approved versions of our history, though.  A bit like '800 years of' ...  that is often cited, conveninetly ignoring 7 years of French control in the 1460's  Never let the facts get in the way of polished image!

“On the great attractions of Jersey for the naturalist, one word will suffice: There is no such spot in England for marine zoology.” George Eliot 1857 (that's more than 1 word Mary Anne btw)

Claude Debussy worked on La Mer & other things here.

Led Zeppelin allegedly took inspiration from St Mary for this line in "Achille's last stand"

"Below the streets that steam and hiss, the devil's in his hole"

Funny place, Jersey.
