Is it just me who objects to the Horrid unpleasent tarry/gas smell around town over the past week?
the contamination of that site must be really bad and after complaining to the people who suposed to look after us they say its not a health hazzard!
well i nearly had to bark at all the lamposts going to Grande Marche this morning to eject my breakfast air quality was so bad,
and the noises from the plant machinery grinding away all day if your unlucky to work in this area sounding like a demented dinosor thrashing granite rocks about well my poor head, i had to close my premises early to get away from it all. bring back the car park as most businesses around gas place have lost their customers because of no parking and traffic wardens who must be on commision as to how many cars they can book, so look out for closures coming soon.

Sad about the PONG! Sure it is not emanating from further up the road like the Royal Square!  I rarely visit the metropolis.  Parking was bad enough around there anyway as the car park was mostly used by workers and shoppers had to run the gauntlet with the traffic wardens if they wanted to go to any establishment other than the Co-op.

The park will probably become a tented city in a few years to house the homeless if the following website

http://www.thisisjersey.com/2010/08/18/former-soldier-faces-homeless-shelter/

and other recent articles are anything to go by and that was only in August 2010, the position can only get worse, unless our leisure seeking elite come back home from vacation and sort out our finances whilst we work our little cotton socks offl.   Oooh I forgot they have iphones and the internet and an army of Civil Serpents to keep them informed.

Gosh must go change my spectacles these give me a distinctly jaded perspective this morning.  Now where did I put my rose-coloured ones!

As I understand it the smell that is currently coming from the digging is not actually a direct result of polluted soil but from a harmless anti-septic vapour (a compound similar to coal tar) that is being pumped into the atmosphere from 10 outlets dotted across the site in order to prevent any nasty or toxic smells from causing even greater discomfort. I know a family who live on Tunnel Street and they have said that whilst they can smell it, its not overpowering. Smell being a highly subjective thing its difficult to say but perhaps if people in the area where kept better informed that would be start.

But I'm very glad they're making the park. Just need to rip down the Odeon and that whole part of St. Helier will be a great place to run a business from in a few years time.

must go and have a smell, the old coal tar smell , they did say was good if you had a bad chest,
i worked with a tar pot boiler for a while 20 years ago, loverly smell, and at the moment am healthy.
mind you with todays overburdened  elf and saftey, i am suprised that we are still permited to walk the streets of st helier , without a mask ,during peak travel(crawl).
i see first hand filters for fresh air into buildings , changed on a regular basis , very dirty and thats three floors up, but i am still alive and understand that polution of some kind may well terminate  me early, unless something gets me before.

Luxury sheer luxury.  We all lived in an Evening Post on the 5 Mile Road and were lucky to have sand for tea.

Sorry but glad to have made your night. It is all true, Seeing the tar boiling in the big steel tub and breaking off the bits that had spit over the side and gone sticky we eat it. Told it was good for us.
Is that a better bedtime story? ( True mind you )

One suspects CB may have reached peak oil some years before the rest of civilization.

From what I recall, the most toxic material from Gas Place will be stored using the same technology as incinerator ash at La Collette. Though plans may have changed, they often do. A fair bit of remediation was attempted in the late 90's as well - using an 'orange peel wash'.

Was very interested to read a comment from 'Pip Clement' on thisisjersey the other day:

"I do not know about the economics of shipping the tins to a recycling plant but the island is going to be paying to have all the ash from the incinerator shipped to Norway for disposal."

Not something I'd heard before & would like to learn more...

Yes interesting.  Why Norway I wonder?

Please excuse the interest but why the sauvastika avatar.  Does this mean you are a Buddhist or a devotee of the terrifying Goddess Kali?

From Encyclopædia Britannica:

The swastika as a symbol of prosperity and good fortune is widely distributed throughout the ancient and modern world. The word is derived from the Sanskrit svastika, meaning “conducive to well-being.”

Simply, it's a symbol I've seen in some fascinating places.

Our cat went onto the site last week and managed to get

the tar or whatever it is all over him, despite the best efforts of

the animal shelter and our vet he died. It was not a very pleasant

death either.  I don’t think it would be a good idea eat any tar from

this site or try and cure your bad chest

Do you?

Your cat probably had very clear sinuses at its demise.
If thats any comfort to you.
