thanks for the  " other side of the  coin " jerseydaz .
as you  know the public are kept like mushrooms, and its very hard to get the full storey even the truth evades us  at times .
so who is the  true culprit ?
here's  a thing,  the skipper should at all times  know the draught of his vessel ladden or unladden, taking into concideration  the amount of fuel and water onboard .
the  course over the ground  any any obstructions  during the time of the voyage .
the time of the day , and the time of  high water and low water.
some days the  air pressure may even be a thing to think about .
so armed  with the information  you should  be able to avoid  grounding .
going back to the day in question .
i still wonder what it was doing  so far up in belcroute bay for the reggatta?

Maybe the fault lies with the skipper who was actually on board the Duke that day. Just cause your contract says you are hired to be a skipper doesn't mean your solely responsible for the vessel 24/7. Its common knowledge round the harbours what did happen.

it may well be common knowledge round the harbour, what happened.
but i will guess the poor old taxpayer , who sadly foots the bill for monumental disasters , know very little.
the  govermental  reply of "lessons  have been  learn't " is  becoming a bit threadbare with this taxpayer.

The law requires that when you hire anybody you must see their qualifications to make sure that they are qualified to carryout the job that they have been hired to do. If they do not do that then they are breaking the law. It is no good the agency said they are qualified for the job, you have to check yourself to the qualifications that person has. If he has lied or forged his papers then you cannot hold the employer at fault if he has taken every possible coarse to check the papers.
This is something that a lot of managers just cannot get their head around that the buck stops with them and not just the person you hire. This is where trouble is found between manager and the workforce meaning a worker asks the manager if the person is qualified to do the job and he is told nothing to do with you. Spells TROUBLE! THe reason for this or one reason is that the manager has never worked or come off of the workshop floor, he possible has a degree in religion and the employer thinks that is good enough and don't laugh because i have seen this.

7. The Connétable of St. John will ask the following question of the Minister for Economic Development –

“Further to the Ministers assertions on 12th September 2011 that the Tug Master involved in an incident in September was „highly qualified with a foreign-going Cargo Master unlimited certificate, has the States insurance company been made aware that the Masters qualifications are not recognised in Jersey or the UK and, if so, will Jersey now have to refund the sums paid to meet the cost of the States tugs repair?”

 http://www.statesassembly.gov.je/AssemblyOrderPapers/2012/2012.01.31%20Order%20Paper.pdf

Nice one Connetable, the question to follow this of course should the answer be Jersey will have to pay, is how much ? and who is responsible given that proper professional checks were not made, and are they still employed by the human resources department.

I was told this morning that the Harbour Master Le Cornu has been pushed out or he retired from the job.
This i take it is because they have merged the airport with harbours which they did once before in the 70's. That did not work out but today it might because of the changing way it which the harbours work.
