Sacked workers to get their jobs back?
« on: March 09, 2008, 12:00:22 AM »
"Employers could soon be forced to give unfairly sacked workers their jobs back.

Draft amendments out for consultation would give the Employment Tribunal the power to force bosses to re-employ workers if it finds that they have been unfairly dismissed.

The proposition, lodged by Social Security Minister Paul Routier, will also give the tribunal the power to reduce the award for unfair dismissal if it finds that the worker was partly to blame.

Senator Routier said that giving the tribunal power to get workers their jobs back was important in a small island such as Jersey. This was because an employee who was sacked from a specialist position in Jersey might not be able to find an alternative job in the Island."

Would you want to go back if you had been sacked?

Funnily enough that was the first thing I mentioned when i saw this story earlier today. I think if the person sacking me had been enough of a bastard, I'd probably go back for a couple of weeks just to spite them, and do the job to the worst of my ability!  :P

If you were the sole employee of a 2 man business, it could prove to be interesting!

I think those who would go back would include State's manual workers, who may have been sacked by someone they rarely see.

I certainly wouldn't like to go back to a job I've been sacked from but maybe that's because I've never held a specialist position where finding alternative work in Jersey of the same calibre might cause a problem.  Even then I'm not sure I'd want my old job back, I'd rather shove two fingers up look for or train for something better.

What I always find with firms is that they always end up 'owning' you some way or another.  I know some people that have worked at the same place in Jersey for over 20 years, and they may as well be glued to it.  Even worse if a family owns the firm because you are fooling yourself if you ever think you will reach the top there.

Some people may find being sacked from such places as a blessing in disguise because people do get over reliant on staying in the same job sometimes!

There are so many crap firms to work for in Jersey though it is no big deal if you get sacked by any of them.  I have been fired before, didn't do me any damage.

I would say there are a few financial firms that are not worth working for.  But I won't name any.  Poor management though is rife in Jersey.
