Cave near Plemont
« on: July 07, 2010, 08:06:56 PM »
I heard when I was young that there is a large and long cave near Plemont which at the time I put down to hearsay. However, someone has recently mentioned it to me again and that it goes inland towards a bunker.

Can anyone tell me if this is true and if so where to find it from the sea as I would like to take a look, if it does exist of course. I am told it goes at least a mile inland. Call me gullable if you wish!

Thanks

My son, doing his degree, studied the Atlantic wall with particular reference to Jersey. He was given copies of several original German maps including this one. We have never found it.

It could be the one at the pinnacle rock les landes but it has a huge boulder put there now preventing  anyone from going in, its a dangerous place to be and mobile phones dont work down there as i found out when i fell over on the rocks,
the ones at plemont are flooded with seawater so waders would be needed to go into them and a bright tourch.

I have never heard anything about this cave. As for Pinnacle Rock i think you may be thinking of La Cotte which has been covered in concrete after the last time they dug up plenty of things which they said would take at least 25 years to study. Prince Charles went there in the 70's. The caves at Plement are shallow into the land but worth having at look at but the water in them is freezing.

Thanks very much for your replies. Sounds like the story may be related to the one at Pinnacle rock then, someone I know and his mates have apparantly bought kayaks to go and find it so I will wait to see what they come up with. I will feel sorry for them if it is the one closed off as being a kayaker myself I know there aren't many cheap kayaks about!

Not an area I know that well but I have been along most of that stretch and not seen anything that would fit the description, still plenty to look at and explore along the coast there, like the old guns below the large German look out bunker.

There is a dig finishing shortly with students around the area above the Pinnacle, and there is a talk on Thursday 15th at 7:30 at the Societe Jersiaise by Dr. Matt Pope, Senior Research Fellow University College London, and Dr Chantal Conneller of Manchester University and other members of the project team who are at present in Jersey for extensive mapping, recording and documenting Palaeolithic and Mesolithic sites in Jersey.  The talk will be about their local research and initial findings and ongoing national and international research into the human occupation during and after the Ice age, I hope to be there.

Thats another reason why I think it is more myth than fact Dundee, but I heard about it when I was say 12 years old and the myth has been resurected. The Societe Jersais thing sounds interesting, although I have to be honest digging up a pot of gold sounds better but I might pop along, I presume anyone can go?

It is an open talk and free. The speakers are young, active, and enthusiastic about what they are undertaking in the Island, Matt Pope is part of the "Boxgrove Project" http://matt.pope.users.btopenworld.com/boxgrove/boxhome.htm
