Phil Maguire - Senatorial candidate
« on: May 21, 2010, 02:45:39 PM »
Right then...anyone know anything about this chap? I have a very vague recollection of him running for Deputy in St. Clement's a few years back. I'm sure his specialised subject is something like the rationalisation of the Social Security and ITIS schemes in order to drive efficiency savings in the civil service. Not, I suppose, very exciting at first glance but who knows - it might be a brilliant plan!

He owns a very impressive beard, that's all I can say. Must save a ton on Gillette*, the best a man can get.

* other brands of razor are available.

Is a plan that has been floated for quite a while , combining Social Security who pnly have to work once a quarter with the tax office who now dont actually have to work at all.
Add the manpower form into the mix and what savings could be made!

As it happens I personally have known Phil for a long time as both a friend (from some geeky activity that I am not about to publically admit to) and in business. What do you want to know??

Well, the BBC have given a lot more about what he stands for

http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/jersey/hi/people_and_places/the_states/newsid_8721000/8721532.stm

and he has a website
http://www.pulse79.com/

but the intriguing
"A Final Word of Guerilla Democracy"
gives a bad link, so I'd like to know what that's about.

Also he doesn't have any email address - unless it is under the missing link page?

And what's his background - education? business? You can't judge a candidate purely on that, but it is useful to know when giving a holistic picture of the kind of person they are.

And finally, I would really and genuinely like to know where he got that waistcoat from, but that's personal nosiness, not really an election issue.

Its certainly not building a website geek activity you refer to, at least I hope not. In this day and age when more people are turning to the internet to get clued up, or perhaps brainwashed I would have thought any senatorial hopeful would come up with a site that at the very least encourages you to look further. Instead, his first line says to me, if you were expecting a website telling you about me and what I could acheive, well I simply couldn't be bothered.

If thats the amount of effort he can put into a website then how is anyone meant to think he will put any more effort into being a member of the states. Sorry, but first impressions count and unfortunately having not met him personally that is my first impression.

He's revamped his website, and it is there:

http://www.pulse79.com/guerilla.htm

He doesn't have have a gripe about ITIS!

I like ITIS because

a) It is better for people (lots of them) who used to find it difficult to budget for tax, and would end up with both fines and deductions from wages (if they couldn't pay the fine, that came out of their wages too) - I know, I used to deal with clients who had these kinds of problems. They'd end up paying more (fine + tax). You can request a re-assessment of ITIS as soon as your tax return is in (good incentive there!) and you can ask for a payments analysis to see if you are paying too much. In the early days, there were lots of teething problems, and we had to chase the tax office on behalf of clients, now there is vastly less of that.

b) Seasonal workers would slip off home and pay no tax at all -  - unjust to the rest of us who live here and can't escape taxes - I know, I helped hotels etc fill in lots of the old "pink cards", and it was just a waste of time - now they can claim back on their tax for allowances, but the they have to pay tax first, and the onus is on them to do it, not the tax department to just write taxes off.

Perhaps he dodged tax before ITIS came in, hence his gripe, he has no solution other than we should all be concerned about it.
