A few hours ago they found the little kidnapped boy in Pakistan. The world knows this morning.

A politician in self exile, has set up a personal blog room with real people contributing from across the world to hang Jerseys dirty washing out for all to see with a counter at the bottom of the page telling us that there are 277,039 unique users.

The power of electronic message sending ( and debate ) confronts little papers like the JEP or little Radio stations like BBC Jersey,  forcing them to work harder and get to the real facts. although what they print and broadcast will be still be accepted by local people who have not got access to the new world, but that is changing more quickly than they would like.

It occurred to me that there are alarming problems in the management of Jersey's administration and Government at this juncture, but what has caused them ?

To be fair there are always going to be those good at their work and those that are not. There are always going to be for and against different policies for Jersey. So nothing new here either.

The problems have bubbled to the surface because we the public have far more information and can ask deep questions about how our valuable tax money is spent why was ash dumped there etc. etc. etc. It is our right after all, and we are no longer asking for transparent Government we are demanding it.

The politicians resisting this massive change of public scrutiny are tripping themselves up. Worse they  truly underestimate the collective intelligence and knowledge of people, and are  drowning in their own excuses. The expression two heads are better than one is no longer adequate. Lets try thousands all able to access the facts, ask questions and all able to voice their opinion.

The genie is out of the bottle and it's called the internet. This has given access to wider information on a scale never seen or allowed before.

It's catching on fast. Have you noticed that on the local media comments section at the bottom of the news story more ordinary people are making their views clear. I even read one from Bridget of the BBC. Fair play to you my dear.

The point is I was wrong. I thought it would be a senior civil servant with a gift for writing and a very big intellect that pens his memoirs at the end of his life. It would be about inside the good and very bad government decisions and corrupt goings on which may embarrass some of those that wish to be titled Sir and politicians who were thought to be good but in fact are rotten to the core.

The book I hope will be worthless because the microscope of accountability of today, will force through better Government. If Jerseys Government accept this fact then honesty, integrity and accountability will also have no place to hide, rising to the surface, and make Jersey once again a wonderful place to live, fully supported by the majority of a knowledgeable population that live on the island.

I don't for one minute believe that Syvret's blog has reached 140 million people, in fact I doubt that there are 140 million people in the world who have heard of Jersey let alone take an interest in what is going on here.

Similarly, Syvret is not going to achieve anything from his base in London. The UK are entering into a general election and have their own serious economic problems as does the rest of the developed world. Do you honestly believe that they care what is going on here? The only stimulus to UK intervention in Jersey would be matters directly affecting the UK's own economic interests or if there was blood in the streets requiring humanitarian intervention. Neither scenario is likely in the medium to long term.

Jersey's problems are local and small scale and need to be sorted out locally. If Syvret really does want to make the changes he and his supporters deem necessary, they will have to be tackled at a local level. He must resume his place in the States, garner support for his ideas and use his position as an elected representative of the people to make his voice heard. Babbling away on a blog site revealing "scandal after scandal" will ultimately change nothing.


Don't hold your breath waiting for the revellations of some retired insider. It is impossible to crap in the trough without first removing your snout. Our connected civil servants and retired politicians never actually leave the gravy train Powell and Horsfall are but two shining examples of this principle. Parasites rarely leave the host until after it dies!

At some point in the near future, we will have to pay the price for years of inept government but there will always be somebody prepared to stand and idiots prepared to elect them on a manifesto of empty promises and absurd ideas. Anybody with any sense at all would not wish to be elected to the States at this time. Anybody doing so would be faced with the same decision facing the current incumbents, don't rock the boat and hope that you can get through your term with the minimum of discomfort or try and set things right and become the most unpopular person in the history of the Island. Jersey politics has, for years , been like a big game of pass the parcel where the prize was thought to be power and a degree of financial reward, not to mention the possibility of a gong! Now that the prize is starting to be revealed as a ticking bomb, only the really stupid are lining up to join the game.

In actual fact according what I heard , he was found 4 days ago , but the father was reluctant to accept responsibility and buggered off back to the UK . We can only wonder at the mysteries of Shiria law , perhaps he is now tainted and needs to be stoned to death , I obviously have no idea , if anyone knows anything about the Muslims perhaps he can shed some light .

However I think you clearly have the wrong end of the stick regarding the first part of my post. The post as the title suggests is about the secrecy of Government being forced open. The first example was our own politician Syvret with a figure of 277,039 unique users, itself not a completely accurate figure. If you have read Syvret's blog,  he admits this. It is the first example I offered about one person spreading information.

The second example I offered was "One man on a second rate stage" with 140 million hits, plus a link to watch his excellent funny act. Had you clicked on the link it would have confirmed it was nothing to do with the first Syvret example. Maybe you don't have broadband and it would have taken to long to down load.I think it ties up quite well,  and begs the question how long would it take the JEP sell 140 million copies, if you wish to extend the context.

You were intelligent enough to understand the news story of the little kidnapped boy and the speed at which news travels across the world. Sadly others are not as intelligent, did not understand and grasped at straws to make silly comments which are useful to no-one, which lets be honest, is their usual style.

Zooomerpadded-cell must be worth 100,000 of those and I would hazard we at Planet Jersey are probaly worth 50, 000 not including your personal 50,000 visits , so that just leaves the man Kimble himself providing another 50,000 hits on his onastic mission to spunk the world (In a totally Kafquesque sort of way). FIRMS from around the world are looking to relocate to Guernsey, according to a leading commercial property specialist.
Jo Watts (pictured), managing director of Jones Watts, said there was a good demand for quality office accommodation, but limited supply was proving to be a stumbling block.

‘We’ve seen some individual companies slim down because they are expanding in other jurisdictions, but I would say there’s more growth than contraction in the office market.

‘Confidence is picking up in the market and we’re seeing enquiries from firms looking to relocate to Guernsey from other jurisdictions, including Gibraltar, Cayman and Bermuda.’

This interest was coming from across the board, including fiduciary, accountancy and private equity firms.

Of course there are few boundaries to the Internet as you point out, this is why some in the Government want to curb it's influence.

I was going to post a question about Jersey Evening Post and their have a say section but I think it has been touched upon in this thread. There does seem to be some bias in what you can "Have your say" on but I am not sure how they work it out.

I am of the opinion that if you are going to have a "have your say" section in one article or letter then it should be on every article or letter, it's not as if they aren't vetted by people first to ensure no swear words get through. I would love to know what boxes need to be ticked before they decide what can and what can't be commented on because I think if you are going to allow it on some but not others then you should not have that section in the first place. At least, not if you expect people to believe you are an unbiased and credible news station.
