If this board closed, for whatever reason . . .
« on: August 06, 2009, 05:53:42 PM »
. . do people have a contingency, another board to keep the information and discussion flowing freely?

What would the plan be etc?

This is just a curiosity.  There's no suggestion implied or rumours heard. I'm just interested.  I've seen boards go before and new ones start up. Sometimes the right people aren't always aware. I'd just like to know if someone had considered it and knew of, or has created, somewhere else?

it would be a loss if pj where to close, i think jersey needs this kind of open forum ,at times having more information than the local press.
also the clear soultions offered by members  to the island problems are very good.

long live planet jersey.

I have actually discussed this problem with some of the members on here , obviously me, myself and I and that bloke I see in the mirror and I have thought of a solution. you may ask a solution to what and you would be a fool if you did not, so here is the problem, the bloke who set this site up pays around £20/month to float it on a server.Because he is taking special deals he has to keep moving from one server providor to another, thats why the latest temporary shutdown, a fixed contract would cost about £720 a year. What I suggest is that 6 of us chip in £100 /annum   ,  for that £100 we would get to use the advertising space ,preferably for a local charity, but perhaps not , for a period to be agreed with Admin geezer.
The JEP who rely heavily on us for their copy might wish to consider sponsorship on the basis that they could get the right to publish our comments?
The SOJ  might wish to sponsor the site via the Arts Council on the basis of our Creative skills?
Any comments? Opinions?

I own a share in a server with a Xeon 3210 Quad Core and 10,000 TB of monthly bandwidth all bought and paid for already.

If anyone needs to host any Jersey, non-commercial websites, then I'd be able to sort something out at no cost.  Perhaps with our Google AdSense ads displayed, to cover our costs.

Could also host commercial sites at minimal cost.

I cant see this board having to close in the near future. It has a steady following and to set up another would be like just trying to reinvent the whole thing again. It could perhaps have a social expansion to it though? Why I say that is because I think the average age of people on here is way above the 18 to 30 bracket. Mind you I dont think many young people are all that interested in politics and 95% of women I know  think its boring.

Are they bored of all politics or just yours?  ;D

I think average age here is 40 - which is a shame. More young people need to get involved.  Even if it's just with the discussion, like me.

Probably!

What I have found is that hardly anybody within the 18 to even the 35 year old age bracket takes much of an interest at all in local politics.  A lot say they are weary of Jersey Politics for a few reasons and mainly because they believe they are unable to change anything.  Expensive housing, GST, higher taxes, lack of career diversity and a general poor attitude towards young people by the media and the Police is felt.

Of the mature of the non voters, constant back stabbing headlines and arguing has turned them off politics altogether. For some reason "scandals" or allegations of "scandals" is appearing to be the norm to them.

As for women, most I speak to only go for personalities, but as hardly any politicion to them has a personality they have little interest.

We thought that during the last elections young people would take an interest but I don't believe they have much faith in anybody standing now to do anything constructive for them.

So its just the 35 plus age group which actually cares more than the younger generation and I think the voter turn out at the last elections demonstrated that and; the turn out to the teenager question time before the senatorials last year (which was a flop) demonstrates apathy conclusively.

I can answer you debumbambee. 13 years ago I was around 22 or 24 and frankly couldnt give a toss about Jersey politics because I had always hoped not to stay here despite being Jersey born.

Again when I was between 24 to 28 all I was concerned with was leaving Jersey and finding a better place.

At around 32 to 34 i decided to save up to do another runner but at 32 ish I got a job that i enjoy doing so now i am 37 doing the same job that I enjoy but states decissions finally have an impact on my day to day life, so I finally find myself at a point whereby I need to vote, so i agree with you. And quite frankly I have missed out on votes over the years but still I have abxolutely no dreams that they would have made any difference whatsoever.
