Does anybody run their own business on here, and what is it like starting a business in Jersey?

I also own a small IT business within the Island, although I work full time elsewhere it helps to make extra on the side, especially now GST is on it's way.

Jersey does not help its young people.  I have a 17 year old son who has spent 1 year at Highlands College training to be a mechanic.  He has been to or rung every garage on the Island and cannot find an apprenticeship so he cannot carry on his course in September (he has to do day release).  Why do Highlands run courses is there are not the jobs out there!!!!

Recently started our own photography business, though still working until it gets to a level where one or both of us can devote our time on a full time basis.

Don't know where to put this new thread. Article in tonights JEP stating that Jersey is the WORST place for expats to be working according to HSBC offshore thingy.  NO SHIT! My heart bleeds for them.  They would have a much better lifestyle in the Caymans, Middle East, America, anywhere but Jersey, so, why do come? not having a poke at the finance industry, just generally asking what is it about Jersey that makes people apply for the jobs.  Any comments?

The difference is that if you get caught shagging on the beach by the police in Jersey, you won't be looking at 6 years in jail.  ;)

The STATES stopped employing apprentices in the late 80's. Which was a very big mistake indeed. Not all people leaving school wish to working in banking and not all school leaves are capable of bank work but are very good with their hands. Without people who work with their hands everybody is in big trouble! most people can read and use a computer but how many can strip down an engine and put it back together. Plumbing, carpenter etc. etc. There will always be work for a skilled man but not always for a bank clerk. That has always made me laugh calling people working in a bank,( finance industry worker ) sounds very good when all they are only bank clerks. Just the tool they use for work as changed from a pen to computer screen.

:( What a pity it is to see coarse language as used above. How can our contributions be taken seriously by all those interested in visiting this Forum, Seeking knowledge, we are now covering on many subjects which have become so interesting, The Forum must be growing in numbers. Im sure its offence affects many of us, belittling the enjoyment in both reading and contributions sent in. Why then spoil it for those who enjoy the debates. ???

We cannot allow the loss of 1,000 jobs, and if the tax is not worth collecting on £18.00 in the UK then who's problem is it ?

BBC UK

A debate in the House of Lords gained cross-party support to close a VAT loophole which costs the UK government £130m each year in lost tax.

The peer behind the motion, Lord Ralph Lucas, branded the industry a "smuggling enterprise".
Goods worth under £18 sent to the UK from outside the EU, including from the Channel Islands, have VAT-free status.

A number of online shopping companies take advantage of the Low Value Consignment Relief.
The Commercial Secretary to the Treasury, Lord Sassoon, said changes to the loophole would be announced in the budget later this month.

More than 1,000 people work in the industry in the Channel Islands.
