St John's Car Boot Sale
« on: July 26, 2009, 11:26:05 AM »
I am sitting watching the people arrive at the car boot sale in St John and even though it does not officially start until 13:00 the numbers coming in already are quite startling.

Are we such a consumer nation that we are willing to purchase other people's tat and place it in our homes or is it that the people who go are budding altruistic economists and using the multiplier effect to boost the economy so recovery from recession is faster?

The reason I go to car boot sales is because I am a tight-asked Jersey person and always ready and willing to purchase good clean second-hand goods at a bargain price.

Try it sometime it really is fun and the community spirit at regular events like that is amazing!

May be like father like son,  they may not have a discerning attitude to be able to discrete the rubbish from the good.

With respect of course!

All car boots sales are excellent. All charity shops are excellent. I take your point Durendal there are many items we would never buy as we don't like the style (tacky ) or we have no need as we have one already.................. On the other hand its the perfect recycling solution.

It costs money to change the worlds raw materials into sellable goods, and then transport them all over the globe. If something is not worn out still of use, sell it and re use it. Terrific.

Finally there is a school of thought ( Budism ) that says material items are just objects that and will breakdown and wearout, so what is the point in loving an item. If you are of this mind why not buy second hand it makes no difference as long as the item meets your needs.

car boots are great recycling points , true one mans tat is another mans treasure, example complete sky box with remote ,ten quid, cost from robbing shop 80 quid, yes my 2nd hand skybox is still working
(saved cash  put to holiday).
even better when you find somthing you need in a skip, or out for the dustman,
the thing is in jersey, people with more money than sense, throw out perfectly good items.
some items that i have gleened, i have sold at auction.(holiday fund).
sadly in this downturn there is a tail off of good stuff, and you can see people selling total junk, that should be at the tip in the first place.
