Given that you believe Corbel gets a pay rise as and when members do, only serves to make yourself look a bit thick, not anyone else.
Simple economics tells me that the wages of any union member are the prime source of the wages of any union representative.
Now lets say average members salary is £20k/Annum , lets say average union rep is on £30k/annum.
Members are already at a disadvantage and any further variance would cause unrest amongst the membership so there is a definite relationship between members wages and reps wages , if you cannot see that then the world of economics has passed you by.
There is a direct and linear relationship between members pay and reps pay. that is an indisputable fact. Union dues are levied on members wages and are unlikely to rise unless members wages rise. Therefore Whilst serving his members the rep is also serving the Union and himself.
All fine and dandy so long as the members are in agreement with the Union. That fine balance has been found wanting all over the world, confrontation is only a workable function in times of plenty, when there is an absolute general agreement within a population that workers rights need to be protected. In times such as we are currently living in , the unions will find little sympathy from the general public for any actions they may take , the vast majority would say "if the buggers go on strike from their "protected" jobs ,sack the lot of them and give them to people who are willing to do their jobs !"
I am sure you think that is ridiculous , well ask the steelworkers in the UK, ask the printing unions, the dockers and the miners.Unless they have public support , their jobs and their unions are stuffed.
Unions are an outdated parasitical relic of the bad old days of class warfare. they did a good job of getting 12 year old kids out of the chimneys ,provided protection and comfort for their members ,but since the 70,s they are no longer required , pretty much their job is done by Human Resource departments and people like Corbel ,like his union and like your mindset are redundant.
I find it infuriating to hear tales of drivers being rightfully dismissed for being either lazy, inept or possibly drunk, just to have the union insist that they be brought back to the payroll or strike action will be taken.Time for a test of that resolve I think.
