Nick Corbel says the States should be taxing the rich.

Jersey's Transport and General Workers Union say ten job losses at a family help centre are just the start of things to come.

The union fears so many States employees could be made redundant that the services they provide would have to be outsourced.

That, they say, would effectively lead to privatisation.

The comments come after news that the Grands Vaux Family Centre is facing closure as a result of cuts in public funding.

Union leader Nick Corbel says the States should be taxing the rich.

I atually agree with him on this one.  It is unfair that somebody earning a 3 figure wage is still only paying 20% tax and then also pays the same Social Security as a person earning less than 38K.

But would they accept it and would the current Government endorse it?

Yes and that private company would re-employ the same people and pay them half the salary.

But they complain every year that they are under paid.  I recall Geoff Southern recently saying in the States that they are not well off.  There was an argument last year that had Jersey Telecom been privatised, the employees would probably have more opportunity working for a bigger company with World Wide status, yet we now know the real reason they hated the idea judging by the recent director bonuses announced.

I pay a hell of alot of tax and I never use any public services. Now we all have to pay more but are the rich getting away with murder? I dont know about the rich but certainly some estate agents cannot be short.

Nick Corbel is the guy who a couple of years ago said that if the States made cuts then it would be throwing thousands of public employees "on the scrap heap" - if I were on the pay panel, I'd remind him he said that, and ask why his members should be paid so well since he clearly believes no one but the States are stupid enough to hire them.

Militant unions like the TGWU will always claim they're underpaid. Unions exist solely to further their member's interests - not to work towards some idea of "fairness," just to get more for themselves. I'd fall over with shock if they ever said "actually no, we're good, thanks." Be careful now, I'm not criticising them for this - it's natural human behaviour. We should just remember it.

There was an illustrative tale that went around the 'net a while back, which I will repost here:

Quote
Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
    The fifth would pay $1.
    The sixth would pay $3.
    The seventh would pay $7.
    The eighth would pay $12.
    The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.
So, that’s what they decided to do.

The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. “Since you are all such good customers,” he said, “I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20.” Drinks for the ten now cost just $80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men – the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his ‘fair share?’ They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody’s share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man’s bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay. And so:

The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).
The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings.

“I only got a dollar out of the $20,” declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man,” but he got $10!”

“Yeah, that’s right,” exclaimed the fifth man. “I only saved a dollar, too. It’s unfair that he got ten times more than I!”

“That’s true!” shouted the seventh man. “Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!”

“Wait a minute,” yelled the first four men in unison. “We didn’t get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!”

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn’t show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn’t have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

We should remember that WE are that friendlier place. Or at least, we have been. Our rich residents are very mobile, and will leave at the drop of a hat if we're not careful. Should we therefore beggar ourselves for them? No. But lets not kill the goose that lays the golden eggs just because we've decided to vote ourselves free lunches.
"The only freedom which deserves the name is that of pursuing our own good, in our own way, so long as we do not attempt to deprive others of theirs, or impede their efforts to obtain it." - John Stuart Mill

Onions and Civil Serpents together with their Bentators like posturing and bargaining!  They have a b*&^y good day out in some high-class swanky hotel going across corridoors to one anothers havens or bavans, thrashing out the details and fine print.  The print being carefully photocopied onto non-photocopiable paper so no leaks can emanate from either side.

Sometimes the Onions win, sometimes it is the Civil Serpents and Bentators that win.

It takes very strong Civil Serpents and Bentators to fight a strong virile Onion.

If the Civil Serpents and Bentators want some advice they should go and see how the Iron Lady postured whilst she was in power.  She certainly did for a few Onions.

I thought strong onions kept the snakes and serpants at bay in the garden. or am I confusing garlic and blood suckers?
