Switch to LED street lighting to reduce energy consumption
« on: July 14, 2009, 02:26:09 PM »
The article says it all:

Quote
A new residential district uses close to 1,000 light-emitting diodes (LED) instead of conventional outdoor lighting, slashing power consumption to about a quarter. Indirect illumination is used for a broader lit area, heightening perceived brightness.

Good isn't it.

If you read around a bit it looks likely this will become pretty standard over the course of the next few years. One hopes Jersey is an early adopter of such technology when the opportunity arises - can't argue with it environmentally or economically.

Great idea, naturally.

Replace as and when they break though - cannot see any money being saved by having a blanket exchange.

It's a shame but you have to move with the times. There's something friendly and reassuring about old school street lights - LEDs are cold, clinical things, generally.

Like most people, I didn't like the orange sodium lights when they were first in use.  But, like most things you get sentimental about them over time.

They're probably only friendly and reassuring because it's what we're used to. In time, LED lights may well be viewed with similar affection.

Outside my humble abode , we have a light which just hangs off the metal arch, powered by the sun and cheap as chips , Would it not be possible to have solar panels on top of each street light providing at least a partial solution to the energy requirement?
Whilst on this train of thought , all of the lights along the avenue could be fitted with propellers to capture energy from wind.
Who says i,m not green??

Green just like a vegetable Sparty!

Incredible  ;D

Imagine how much energy could be saved if everyone went to bed when the sun went down!?

I feel we're breaking new ground here!

any saving must be good, so i am lead to believe the big lamps at the harbour cost a fortune for bulbs.
street lamps  seem to have a long life, we have a few near our home, and they must be 5/6 years old at least.
it must be better to change over to led when they come to the end of their life.
maybe under the banner of works on victoria avenue , should we not see a test scheme of led lighting , the jec could  monitor power consumption and life span, plus degredation

Anything that uses less power just forces the JEC to put the price of leccy up.

Stands to reason, if they are selling less they have to up the price to maintain profit margins.
You only have to look at how much the price has risen since insulation standards were raised in new housing etc.

Just an update that Transport and Technical Services has now put low energy lights all along Victoria Avenue by the sea wall.

There are now low-energy spotlights available with proven technology, and I hope that these are considered when existing ones reach the end of their useful life.

With the harbour lit up like a christmas tree all night, and flood lights on the castle, I question if the front needs the silly lights at all, surely something more innovative and greener could be done the surrounding area that is either modern build, or has been recently updated and refurbished.

Perhaps they could be turned off outside the main tourist season (and shoulder months)?
