'Ditch the incinerator'
There's growing support in Guernsey for the idea of ditching the proposed energy-from-waste plant.

Campaigners against the £80m project would prefer the island to export its waste to Jersey, where an incinerator is already under construction.

Guernsey Deputy Al Brouard says many like-minded people have been contacting him.

Jersey's plant will be ready in two years and will initially have sufficient capacity to burn all of Guernsey's rubbish as well.
Jersey's plant has been paid for from tax revenue - but the Guernsey plant will be funded through a 25-year loan, serviced by increased tipping charges. Loan interest will amount to around £53m.

Any thoughts about this one?

True, but will it have a greater impact on the environment if we are having to deal with thier rubbish as well?

Logic would suggest less. 2 Incinerators burning at high temperatures will ton per ton burn the same as 1 supplied by the same 2 sources. The saving to the environment would be the manufacture of 1 incinerator, the loss on the other hand is the energy used (presumably in permanence) to transfer the rubbish to Jersey. Over the years this will far outweigh the gain. Therefore time will say no. Equally, if there were controls on the products before they became rubbish, then perhaps there would be a reduced requirement and therefore a lesser impact on the environment.

It would also only be a temporary solution. The reason why the Jersey incinerator has excess capacity now is that it has been designed to be big enough to cope with what they envisage the increase in waste will be over the course of its lifetime. So in ten years time it is likely that the excess capacity will no longer be there. Quite frankly though if Guernsey wants to take it’s tax money and pay us for the use of our incinerator until we reach that point, it’s defiantly good for our economy so sounds good to me and will mean that they can build their incinerator a few more years down the line (hopefully when the economy is on the mend).

Being a good Jerseyman it will take us a long time to burn the whole of the land of the Donkeys as the whole island is rubbish but we should take great pleasure in it!

Once again i stated that we would be taking Guernsey's rubbish and that is why we are having the size incinerator on the East Landfill.

As a few of us suspected, taking Guernsey's rubbish certainly was on the cards.

Only reasons it isn't to happen is Guernsey wont pay £120 per tonne.

just a point here , as a user of the dump  at bellozane , i find we have all being handed out  letters , to tell tts what we will be dumping and  apply for a weighbridge permit, we have in the letter , being  refered to as customers .
it does not take too much stretch of the imagination to guess what may happen next.
so if you are having any work done , that will generate wood , cardboard ,ect you may soon have  to pay to get rid..
lara , for as long as the fuel farm has being there , it has always has the potential to go bang .
