Think local, buy local, be a mug or be smug
« on: June 20, 2009, 02:15:20 PM »
I thought i would make a post on the recent topic of buy local and wanted to share my experience of what buying local really means and if it really can be bought cheaper locally, so here goes

My most recent big buy was a sit on top kayak I payed £330 with shipping included, I could have bought the same from a local company for £350 but it was the previous edition which i could also have bought online for £220. I was smug.

Prior to that purchase I bought a camera, a nikon D60 DSLR it cost me £320 on the net but I almost bought it at the JEC because it was there on display but it was at least £80 dearer so i bought it off the net, again I was smug.

A few, maybe more years ago I bought a computer from a shop that used to be where the printing shop is in columberie opposite spar. It never worked from day one it crashed every time i started it up or at least ten minutes later. I complained and complained and complained again till they finally agreed to send it back to the manufacturer who confirmed it was knackered. I then received it back in all its parts and had to put it all back together again. In which case I was a mug. (until i shoved a doner kebab through their letterbox in which case i was smug again!!)

Yesterday I looked at a weights bench from a Jersey company it cost £140 plus an extra £30 for the privaledge of them setting it up and removing the packaging, online it is £91 including delivery, however they dont take away the packaging and set it up so its a terrible service!!

On the otherhand I went and bought my veg and stuff from Lucas brothers the other day and walked out with a shedload of food and it cost me only £6, goddamn i was smug.

So my point is can you buy anything cheaper on the rock apart from vegetables if so then tell me!

Bottom line : When times are hard and people are counting their pennies there is little loyalty
I prefer to buy local produce as it is fresher and hasn't travelled many miles from a different country and therefore is likely of a inferieur quality but that's it
All the rest will be bought online if is cheaper - end of

Sorry to bring my post up but I read the Jep comments section today and it made me wonder if you buy cheap dvds etc off the net from Play.Com then does that not mean you are buying local and keeping locals in employment?

Everything I've ever bought from Play.com has been shipped from the UK for some reason.

I have noticed that too Stoneface because it takes about 2 or 3 days to arrive but it isn't it a local company so therefore we are buying cheap but still local?

Play.com is a majoritarily Jersey owned operation and employ a number of staff in Jersey, so it counts in my book.

Same here stoofa, so in efect there should be no moaning about people buying off the internet when an internet company is allowed to set up here.

Buy local : I do make sure that the fresh produce I buy is indeed fresh / locally grown as it makes sense
I know it will contain more goodness that the stuff coming from Peru etc and I am prepared to pay more for it
"Jersey Jewel" tomatoes are just the business !

This much is absolutely true.  I always take fresh Jersey produce with me when I go to the UK.  My friends there cannot get enough really fresh Jersey Royals and Jersey Jewel tomatoes.

I'm sure that the Polish workers there will be excited by your acceptance speech!
