No confidence vote on Health Minister

Jersey Deputy Roy le Herisser has called for a vote of no confidence in the island's Health Minister, Senator Jim Perchard.

Senator Perchard has been under fire from States members since he apologised for using "inappropriate language" during a States meeting.

He was reported to have told the former Health Minister, Senator Stuart Syvret, he should "top himself."

Deputy le Herissier lodged the motion this morning, and said he was disappointed Senator Perchard hadn't done more to show he regretted his actions.

"I was hoping the Minister would resign and submit himself for re-election. I don't think that the apologies from the Chief Minister amounted to a defence and it's something I felt I had to test with the House," said Deputy le Herissier.

Senator Perchard was unavailable for comment.

At least we'll be able to see if his fellow members feel that his conduct is acceptable as I would say a lot of the public feel it's not.

If there is one States member I have respect for that is Le Herissier
I bet you it will not come to the vote. Perchard will resign before that. Hope he doesn't slash his wrists !

From memory the Assembly voted 31 -21 in favour of JP against Paul Routier (TleS's nominee).  I wonder how many of those who voted Jimmy in would be prepared to back him  now?  Of course, it was a secret ballot so we'll never know I guess.  Still, as Moot says, I would hope he resigns before the debate, I think he would earn a great deal more respect from the voters.  He could then make a "full and frank" resignation statement in the House, availing himself of parliamentary privilege and tell us all what really went down between him and the Rouge Bouillon 1!

I doubt he will resign - he will sit there with that spiteful smirk on his face until he is forced to go.

This will show the true calibre of rightminded States Members.

Thank you Roy.

I could not agree more with Deputy Roy Le Herissier, Perchard should fall on his sword or face a vote of confidence. If he had the backing of his fellow States Members that would tell us just how flawed they really are!
Someone said Le Herissier would make a good Chief Minister, he certainly seems to be very level headed and is respected amongst the States and the public. I would give him a vote if i had a choice. Also in 3 years time new chief minister, Higgins stands out as a possible and he knows what he is talking about, he is no fool and seems to be for the people.

Usually when one member brings a vote of no confidence against a sitting minister and they win the vote, they then take over the ex-minister's position. So if Roy Le Herissier wins the vote he should become Health Minister. On what he has had to say on the child abuse etc. etc. there could be a very big shake up within the civil servants because it really does need to find out who was responsible for which areas of the recent failures of children service and the death of a nurse. I hope he is successful and becomes Minister for Public Health.

Amazing isn't it Roy Le Herissier requests a vote of no confidence when this man didn't even go through a public vote to get in as a deputy in the first place.
Amazing that he has the honesty- I agree.

I guess nobody stood agianst him then. Everybody within his constituency must have been satisfied with his service in the States so far towards them and the island. That says alot of the man.

You know if I was running a book and after the GST and incinerator votes recently, I bet it will fail.  Stuart Syvret got arrested yesterday and I bet some States members will side with Jimmy Perchard because they know how indimidating his blog has been of late and they will know it has a massive connection to Jimmy's recent outburst.

This vote should not be about sides or Stuarts blog. JP has twice told Stuart to do away with himself and then lied. This man is not fit to be a minister end of.

Gee Gee I am so very sorry my daughter has attempted suicide three times and I live with the threat every day.  I cannot even comprehend what you have gone through, this is why Perchards words have hurt many people my thoughts are with you. I just don't think some people think enough about what they say. x

Thanks so much, I am pleased the Mod has seen fit to remove the offensive posts which must be equally offensive to you and others as well. One way ar another Perchard's days are numbered, this is not a witch hunt, he is just so unsuitable for the job.

How I wish there were words or help I could give you or your daughter. It is so sad that our children who are loved so much can't find a reason for living despite all the love in the world, this is why those like JP and the poster on this thread have no concept and must have rather sad minds themselves. This is why it is such a sad old world we live in.

My thoughts, good wishes and prayers are with you believe you me - how I wish I could do something for you.
Take Care xxxx

Luckily I didn't see the offensive posts. I know people whose children have committed suicide and I know what hell you are living with Gee Gee
I met someone last week whose 2 teenage sons killed themselves on seperate occasions. My 19yr old son died of cancer not long ago and he very much wanted to live but he had no choice. When he was dying I often thought whether him talking to suicidal youngsters would have done any good
Some people think that Perchards's comments were in jest. Any person joking about this must be sick or demented
For a government minister to do it is bloody disgusting. I don't know what the Chief Min was playing at when he didn't sack him. Perhaps it says something about him as well

Moot - to you my deepest sympathies also, isn't life cruel sometimes?, but those who have not had the experiences we have can have no conception of the hurt of the inane words they choose to pour forth without thinking first.

When it is our Health Minister, it only compounds the fact that he was totally inoffensive and does not deserve to hold his post. Let us hope that common decency prevails over the no-confidence vote, and none of this sycopantic 'lets look after one of our own nonsense'.

You are more newly bereaved than I, but, and I know it is probably no consolation, although the pain NEVER goes away it changes and if you can do something positive in the future thinking of your son, it does help a bit (unless some-one like JP brings it all back afresh).

My thoughts are with you.
