Sorry 13th parish, the states keep putting up the cost of living, I may be wrong but Poundworld ( and other businesses ) get hit all the time. How about the new harbour charges, charging £1.20 per ton per container, out of the blue, a new charge on goods coming into Jersey 40 tons means another £48. The GST 3% plus a load of unpaid paperwork for the business to collect money for the States.

The problem being most of the increases are States department greed, reports and orders of fee increase, signed by Ministers who have never run a business. More empty shops, more people forced out of a living simple becuse they cannot cope with rises like 24% in electricity, the big one. At home you can cut back, there shops have very little option but to pay. Imagine being a butcher with all those fridges running, are you going to put your prices up 24% in this economic climate. How short sighted and sad !

The good news is that very soon States Departments will get much less work from small medium retail businesses, because there will be so few left.

We have lost the local CDP RS electrical Branch (RadioSpares) recently because of get stuffed terry tax
and Im thinking about closing my company soon (March or April) or when the dosh runs out
because of the hassle trying to get goods thro customs and freight charges as caused by GST! grrrrr
and all the uneccesary paperwork and worries + extra apology phone calls to customers expecting their goods
on time like it used to be.
why do we bother anymore?
think i will  just spend the days on the beach fishing for free food
but its a sad day if £world closes because of the stupid island taxes
>:(

Supply and demand again.

Unfortunately for pound world, they've been selling the same crap there since they opened.   They absolutely could have cleaned up, in my opinion, if they'd centred the whole operation more around good quality, labelled toiletries, cleaning and food products and less around plastic gnomes and last years calendars or other such tat that made the shops an embarrassment for your average Jersey snob to visit.

If Jersey hadn,t continued to use the paper pound note, maybe Poundworld wouldn,t have folded so easily.

ps: I love the paper pound note, It still gives 100p or 20 shillings,(remember them?), some sense of value.
