Jersey's new Minister for Sport Deputy James Reed has earmarked an upgrade of facilities at Fort Regent.
The future of the Fort Regent had been uncertain, however Deputy Reed wants the matter settled.
The minister told Radio Jersey: "I am determined to work to retain a sports and leisure centre at the Fort, with upgraded facilities.
"I'm not going to allow it to drag on. Certainly in my time it's an area I'm going to put some effort into."
The new Minister for Education, Sport and Culture is also looking to work with the media and sporting clubs to promote sport within the Island.
"I want to really promote sport, to focus on what we are doing, to identify the sports available so residents and tourists alike can participate and enjoy the wide range of sports we have on offer."
While a tightening of State budgets has been called for, the minister said he will aim to keep current funding levels.
I thought Fort Regent cost over 20 Million a year already?
Ashley:
20 million is a bloody lot of money. 55 grand a day. . . . . come on. . . pull the other one.
It does need to be updated. It needs something, that's for sure. I would love to see it be returned to it's former glory. When I was a kid it was one of the most magical places on earth. I feel privileged to have grown up in an era when it happened.
Now there's nothing. Shame.
fryertucker:
Fort Regent needs private investment not tax payers money. Even back in the 80's it was a rip off so how anybody can say it was great needs to get their head examined.

It's a matter of opinion. The subject was recently raised on another forum: here http://www.islandbass.com/showthread.php?t=6422
Please ignore the fingering comments. You'll see that it clearly was held in high regard by those who went.
As for value. It was excellent value, in my opinion. My parents were tight and they paid for me. That's a decent enough yard stick for me. It certainly wasn't anything like what Aqua Splash charge. yet it had 10 tens as much to do.

This was a figure given out a few years ago, (maybe a states member can confirm whether it is accurate or not). This was the cost of lighting, heating, staffing, cleaning etc etc.
