Golden Ball Sculpture
« on: February 13, 2008, 03:51:59 PM »
Has anyone heard of when the golden ball will rise and fall again with the tide?
that sculpture thingy (just a blue pole now) thats  down on the waterfront not far south from the bronze tree gizmo
it was handy to tell the state of tide from afar but has since lost it ball thing now
 for well over a year.
dont know if the public payed for it but it seems a shame it hasent  been working for so long?

The golden ball has never worked correctly. It is sited on dry land and sensers are fitted in the water to relay signals to the electric panel that works the ball going up and down. On the end of Victoria Pier there was a tide gauge in a little brick hut which is still there. From the inside of the hut runs a pipe straight down into the water. In this pipe was a ball with a wire fixed to it and as the tide went up or down the ball did the same because of the raising and lowering of the tide inside the pipe. So simple! So you see it will never work correctly unless it is contacted to the tide manually. This golden ball cost £27,000 which the then harbour master brian nibbs gave the go ahead for this useless piece of sculpture. Mind you he does have an interest in this by way of one daughter who does sculptures like the one outside of the airport, the triangle pyramid. Another piece of junk like the steam clock that is not driven by steam but electricity. Remember the photo in the jep? The steam engine was in a workshop being painted up because it looked dirty but the clock kept time.

Hi white Knight , As an Engineer I am sure you are well acquainted with just about every mishap that can be possible , when you mix, a) the sea and B) Mechanics. And I suggest the goldenball is a good example of what happens.
This is one of the reasons that I believe wave power will not be available (unless at horrendous cost= non economical) for a long time yet.
I note that the only trial working model of the Snake ( wave powered electrics) has broken down. The firm that made the parts in Australia has gone bust, and the "snake" is now ashore awaiting restoration.
Brilliant idea , but right now non viable.

Of all things, I would have thought that the state of the tide was one of the things that needed illustrating the least. *

*Based on the assumption that we don't need to be told if it's raining. Some might though.

Hi Spartacus. Yes i am well aquainted with sea and mechanical works. In my time i have maintained all the buoys, beacons and lighthouses. Doing the mechanical and electricial side of the job. I was fortunate to be trained on steam, diesel, petrol, hydraurlics and diesel engines also AC / DC electricity with my main job being maintaining cranes etc. If you want something to work make it as less complicated as possible. Now if they had put the "golden ball" on the end of Elizabeth Pier ( that is the one that the ferries moor up to ) with a pipe etc. the ball would go up and down and no electric needed. To simple for these high flyers who no nothing but bulls**t and the more it cost the better. Take the new crane on the New North Quay, they really do not have anybody over here to repair it if it goes wrong. Also it appears to be breaking down alot i hear. On another note the marina damage and security. I believe G4 looks after that by way of checking twice a night at a given time and that is all. Otherwise you have to pay more for farther checks, would be much cheaper to employ a man watching cctv ( if they work that is ) through the night. But then they would employ a manager to oversee him i supose. The more people in the chain of command the more you can distribute the blame around and that way no one person takes full responsibility. That is how the civil servants work. So no accountability. Watch and see what the outcome is over the £3,000,000 etc. on incinerate comes out like.
