No more cheques?
« on: February 11, 2008, 05:43:27 PM »
Retail giant Marks and Spencer has announced it will not be accepting cheques from next month.

It's the latest trend amongst retailers, leaving some customers - already struggling to cope with chip and pin -anxious.

The charity 'Age Concern' fear pensioners will be hit hardest.

I must admit that I haven't written out a cheque of my own for over 2 years.  Mind you I am surprised that pensioners can even afford to shop in Marks and Spencer.

M&S say that only 1% of payments are made using a cheque, so not surprising they no longer want to deal with cheques.

Cheques have been history for decades in other countries, so I can't see it being a problem to scrap them.

I only ever use cash.  Trouble with cheques is that you don't really know when they will be presented and if they bounce you end up being charged.

I'm sure if that 1% of cheque-using customers stopped shopping completely at stores who refuse cheques, that 1% would suddenly seem a lot more important to those shops!

It takes about 5 working days for a cheque to clear anyway!

Cheques should be history.

Queuing up behind a cheque book Charlie does my head in. They take flipping ages.

5 days to clear?

Why?

In this day and age ffs.

Its funny they have taken that time since i can remember. Why has the process not sped up with the advent of the internet and links between banks?

I haven't used a cheque for years, but I feel the same when I'm stuck in a queue behind someone paying with a card. Ban 'em and stick to cash!  :P

I agree with that one.  Why can't people carry cash!

Always carry cash. But might i ask whats the problem with cheques? if they bounce then you have an argument, but would rather send a cheque through post than cash. Also the added benefit of a cheque through the post over a Postal order  is the cancelation if its lost. just cancel the cheque and your not out of pocket. Pay upfront for a face value postal order and it gets lost??? your out of pocket!!

Thats my views. Dont disregard the personal cheque just yet, has many uses!

Both cheques and postal orders are no longer useful. They have already been replaced by other methods, e.g. direct debit, BACS, PayPal, and others...

Why use the mail to send cash?  ???

No-one misses cheques in countries where they were phased out decades ago.

Cheques are still useful to a large number of people. One example, Ebay. Most people take Paypal, but there are still a number who will only take cheques.

And don't forget pensioners, the majority of whom don't have credit cards, using only cheques and cash.

One other quick point, most people don't use cheques anymore because credit cards are so common. But look at the way Egg recently cancelled the cards of  160,000 customers.  They claimed it was to get rid of risky customers, but it turns out a lot of the victims have been people who keep their payments up to date....thus make the company less money. I'm sure many of that 160,000 will now be dusting off their cheque books. And if other companies take the same line....?

The cheque is certainly not as dead as the image presented by the companies who can no longer be bothered to accept cheques, but its death is being forced upon us.

Thousands of people pay bills by cheque through the post. How would you pay a bill that comes through your letter box? Certainly not drive to pay cash! Shops may well stop taking cheque but there will always be pay by post.

Sure sign of the recession !
