Bus Shelters in St Brelade
« on: November 03, 2008, 05:59:10 AM »
Sean,

Quite some time ago, when Simon Crowcroft was in charge at Public Services (now TTS), he got together a scheme for bus shelters sponsored by advertising, at no cost to the public, which never got through (I think Alistair Layzell didn't like the idea).

In these green and credit crunch times, when we should be encouraging people to catch the bus, there is a singular dearth of shelters in St Brelade. Would you be supportive of an such a scheme if it was revived, or would you be able to look into that.

Tony

Hi,

If I were to even try to keep up with Dylan' questions, I would need to be here 24/7. I have been busy the past two weeks and have simply not been on here.  I have been for weeks and weeks before that but my admirer would not acknowledge that.

There is a shortage of Bus shelters on Route de Genets and in the St. Brelade area in general. However, TTS have agreed to repair the one at Don Farm and I am cautiously optimistic that there will be a new one linked to a pelican crossing up at Pont Du Val on the Quennevais Road.

TTS keep saying they have no funds for minor works programmes.  I have to keep badgering away.

I am still trying to get the one at St. Aubin re-instated.

If the Crowcroft scheme needs no financing, then what is the problem?

The bus stop at the top of Mont Nicolle has been on the urgent list for some time.  Unfortunately bus shelters cost money.  :'(

Hi,

Just been told that the bus shelter that used to be in St. Aubin can be re-instated if everyone can agree a new location. The original one was nearer Sacred Heart and when a house was sold, the new owner wanted off street parking so the bus-stop had to go.

Amazing that the shealter is still around !!

The current bus stop is a temporary one.  It also happens to cause maximum trouble as:
1. The bus exhausts blow all over where Murray has his outside tables
2.  It is just alongside the part of the road where there is an island.  If there are two buses - or one stops badly - noone can get past.

The original one was moved when the owner of the house next to the old bus stop applied for planning permission to make an opening to create private parking, thereby taking at least two cars out of the car parks.

I understand there are discussions ongoing as to where to resite the bus stop.  Temp passe they apparently used to stop next to the kitchen shop - but I can't think that would be very safe nowadays.

I didn't know about that one - I suspect it was scuppered by planning - we will track it down!

If I remember aright, it was scuppered by Alistair Layzell and Planning.

http://www.statesassembly.gov.je/documents/minutes/38634-40822.htm

The Committee is aware that in both Britain and France the private sector has been involved in the provision of bus shelters. The typical arrangement is for the cost of provision and of maintenance to be met by the company concerned in return for the use of advertising panels on the shelters. The Committee is aware of the Planning and Environment Committee's refusal to consider such an option for Jersey, and of its concerns about advertising generally.

Any takers for re-opening looking into it?

Hi,

I have now had a long conversation with some people in the know at TTS. Connex and TTS have agreements that make it difficult for Connex to carry advertising.  That same applies to Bus Shelters as the advertising has to be done on a common agreement. There are now one or two sponsorship deals notably EDD.

Anyway sponsored Buses and Bus shelters are being re-visited.

If they're to encourage more commuters to take the bus to work, then more shelters are essential.   Standing in the rain for 15 minutes, in the winter, puts people right off.

I see no problem with advertisements on bus shelters, so long as some careful thought is put in to it.
