Philip Ozouf: Sewage System

Quote from: Spin Doctors
SEWAGE SYSTEM – I want to see the Island’s sewage system extended.  It is unfair that those not connected to main drains have to pay for tanker collection.  The cost could be funded by a small supplement on water rates and phased in over 10 years.  I also want to see the unacceptable smell at Bellozanne addressed with the installation of a deodoriser.

The cost of this would be what?

Huge I would imagine, and in some cases an engineering feat to behold.  Try connecting a house tucked away in a steep tree lined valley to the main sewer.  Crap doesn't float uphill.  Pumping stations are expensive to build and have ongoing maintenance costs.  In some cases you could end up with one pump serving just 1 or 2 houses.  Does that make sense?

"The cost would be funded by a small supplement on water rates."  So, since when does Jersey Water have anything to do with sewage treatment and TTS?  This is exactly the same as suggesting that Jersey Telecom should recover the cost of sewer upgrades.

"I also want to see the unacceptable smell at Bellozanne addressed with the installation of a deodoriser."
This is already on the cards, and far from a new idea.

Try the smell from the cows from his family farm!  How about a deodoriser at Rue de Tapon?

The smell at Bellozanne is nothing to do with the sewage plant - FACT

It is a layer of residual hot gas which emanates from the roof vents in the states building and floats on latent wind currents in the lower strata, settling in the peaceful and beautiful Bellozanne vale. The cause of this is the extreme surplus of Bovine waste which is paraded within the Chambers. As it arises and disperses in this manner, the members of the Chamber are sadly unaware of its existance. -
