Jersey anthem
« on: September 28, 2008, 02:37:15 PM »
My eldest son is 7, and he got a free ticket to go and see the football match Jersey vs. England Amateurs - provided an accompanying adult paid for their ticket, of course. Now, my husband and I constantly reverse roles, so we did again last night : he hates football and I really enjoy it, so ...

Anyway, it was quite funny to witness, though ... The majority of people got up as soon as they started playing the British anthem ; you should have seen the many blank faces, though, when they played the Jersey anthem. Some people looked at each other with faces saying : "What the heck is this ?" Some became jojos : "Do I have to stand ? Or can I sit down ? Stand ? No ? Or maybe better !"

You see, that 1/2 m pounds to improve Jersey's image internationally is going to be money SOOOOOOOO well-spent !  ;D

You're right God Save the Queen is our national anthem - but is also the Anthem of England, Scotland, Wales, Guernsey, The Isle of Man, The Isle of White....

The main reason for suggesting the idea of a Jersey Anthem was for sporting occasions - when we're playing Guernsey, England or somewhere else with the same 'National Anthem'.

There is also talk in England right now (and has been for a while) of an Anthem for England for use at sporting events and 'English' events.

God Save the Queen would still be used on state occasions etc...

Not sure a competition would work to find an anthem though - if it is a good idea to have a seperate one - surely an anthem is born out of tradition and time?
