Phil did say he will come on and answer questions so here is my first one.

How can we sustain the civil service wage bill in the long term and why can't the States cut spending?

To Mr Ozouf

Will you please resign and join the Conservative Party - they need you more than Jersey!

How many reviews &  consultations do you need to get a depositors protection scheme in place?

"How many reviews &  consultations do you need to get a depositors protection scheme in place?"

That all depends on how much you know about the economy.  If you don't know much you have to ask a lot of people.

With what will they guarantee deposits?
The rainy day fund? I doubt that would cover residents deposits.
As stated by Frank Walker they are more than happy to guarantee residents deposits since they are aware that none of the local banks would be allowed to fail or else it would be tits up for the entire banking community! Well not exactly in those words. The bigger issue, the guarantee of all deposits ,
500 billion ? And if no guarantee for those , why would they want to stay?
Theres a hole in my bucket dear Philip , dear Philip ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,etc

Mr Ozouf
You have said that you are all for Sen Cohen's waterfront plan with the sinking of the road and the Esplanade Quarter. There is no getting away from the fact that Jersey will be hit by a recession if it hits the UK albeit perhaps not to the same degree. The building industry is always one of the hardest hit in recessions and Harcourt would be no exception with commitments in various countries on the go, law suits in two and perhaps starved of credit in the near future.
You have said that you would make sure that "the contract with the developers is watertight with the developers to protect the interest of the islanders / tax payers "
The only way this could be done is by bank guarantees which, up to recently, was " waterproof " With banks now going bust how exactly would you hope to achieve this ? Considering the Esplanade Quarter depends on these same banks willing to spend a small fortune to move from their present location to the Quarter and the cost of project being over £300 million, ( most expensive States project ever ) do you not think it prudent to shelve the project until the global finance situation has improved greatly ?
Please remember it is not your money you put on the line and the risks you would be taken are ours, the tax payers

In support of Moot13s view point.

Report by Blackfriar.

Daily Express 2nd Oct. 2008.

The amount of empty office space in London’s financial district has shot up 46 per cent, to 7.8 million sq ft. in the past year, sending rents falling 11.5 per cent, says consultancy NB Real Estate.

It is impossible for Jersey not to be effected by the international imploding financial sector, and the down sizing that will take place.

http://planetjersey.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,620.msg15769.html#msg15769

A small Island should be flexible and be able to move quickly. Not with Jerseys lets have several meetings about having a meeting, attitude. After employing consultants maybe and a proper report being written they  may all get around a table.

This gives politicians and Chief Execulovies the excuse that the consultant told us, so, its not our fault if it all goes wrong.

Cancel the Harcourt development now, as the treasury doors have not been hammered on yet, to provide funding for a lost and very expensive cause.

No need to bring more consultants to waste time bringing yet another depoitors protection scheme. Having attended a husting meeting. Mike Higgins one of the new Candidates openly came out and said he had put togather the above scheme all ready. I believe in 20002 as he was in that line of work at the time. But it was promply shelved.Seeing just how long it takes for the States to get things done. Its might just still be sitting up on the same shelf.
Hope this Candidate gets in. Valuable to have him on board with first hand knowledge of how they work on the inside. We,ve complained for far too long of lack of accountablity. Having heard him at the above hustings, He definately comes over as to genuinely care what is happening in this island. ???

The draft law was published in 2003 - see my blogspot http://nickpalmer.blogspot.com/ for an amusing tale of Philip Ozouf versus Mike Higgins before the St Lawrence Hustings started. Philip had an intense talk with me about my post tonight at the Saviour's Hustings which I shall be writing about tomorrow (Wednesday). Some existing States members said that he only does this to those he feels are a threat - so hurray for me!

Nick to quote from your blog...

"I hear that Philip Ozouf, who increasingly seems like Tony Blair (at the end of his career) and Peter Mandelson all rolled up into one, told Mike (Higgins) "if you're trying to get me, I'll get you". Statesmanlike, not! I don't know HOW the phrase was said, whether in a friendly manner or vindictively, but all I know is that if you catch Philip "off-camera" he looks like a tense cornered rat. In a second though he can switch on the "smarm" when the limelight beckons.

If I ever see you in a pub I'll buy you a pint for that little gem!

Election night for sure but I can't imagine getting tanked up at one of the candidates 'polls closed' parties at some dodgy 2 star hotel in St. Saviour's. I think there should be a PJ party. We could find a pub with wi-fi, bring our laptops and post abuse to each other from across the bar.
