Policies or wish list
« on: September 13, 2008, 05:22:35 PM »
I have just reviewed Jeremy's website and it is noticable that he has not got a clue about politics. I will give him cudos for standing up and trying but there is no meat to his policy, at best its a wishlist and there is no attempt to explain how this wishlist will be accomplished. Way too young and naive, but at least he has the "put up or shut up" that is needed to at least put your name forward.

Listed below, my queries in red.

No GST LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE OF JERSEY
But how do you fill the 60 or 70 million shortfall once you remove it and the 0/10 is in next year?

Regenerate Fort Regent to provide affordable facilities for young people
£20 million a year to run and god knows how many Millions to regenerate? would you call that affordable?

Enforce job promotion from within the Island
goes against human rights

Control Immigration
How?

Safeguard our beautiful countryside
How?

Make decisions that are best for Jersey and it's people - not simply following the UK and EU
Such as?

Affordable housing - use the waterfront not green zones
Waterfront is "Prime Site", you won't get affordable there unless its a shoe box.

Free childcare
Noble, where do you get the money from?

No to importing milk & bull semen - preserve the purity of our Island breed.
This has already been voted on and agreed due to the inbreeding and problems with milk yield this causes.

Make Social Security and Income Tax fairer - reinstate full mortgage allowances
What reforms will you bring in to make it fairer, what will it entail and who will be the winners and loosers?

Review public transport - improve the school bus service
Wishlist Item - How

Investigate alternative waste disposal options
Wishlist Item

Promote and encourage real Jersey businesses (especially small businesses)- no Deemed Distributed Law
There are not that many "real" Jersey businesses left. How would you promote and encourage?

Make States Members accountable for their decisions and most of all enforce Transparency of Government so you know what's going on and why, which States Member voted for what and make them LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE OF JERSEY!
You can already see which states member voted for what on the states website. How would you make them accountable, and what would transparency entail?

Vote for Jersey! Vote for Jeremy!

I agree that this is a wish list.  Spot on with a few observations here DD.

I'm pretty sure that the various plots at the Waterfront have already been either zoned, or built upon.  Most of it is, or will be, residential.

If he's suggesting that further land reclamation should be carried out, then that would happen with in the marine equivalent of green zones, the Ramsar areas.

I think we need to look to the tatty end of town, and make that a more desirable place to live.  Gas Place could be used for housing, for example.

Its a suicidal manifesto.  To say a person can promise young people the ability to enforce job promotion from within the Island is a careless thing to say.  DD managed to rip the whole thing to bits in 30 seconds.  Welcome to the real world kid.

DD thank you for your comments and please keep throwing your questions at us. Jeremy will be happy to answer your questions at the hustings - see you there.

Just on the point of financing Fort Regent since this is not complicated - we suggest this is done by using private enterprise.

Even that was suggested 2 years ago.  Does this guy have anything ORIGINAL in his manifesto?

It's not about original ideas at the moment- it's about listening to the people and doing something about it!
Yes, good suggestions have been made in the past but have been totally disregarded by the States - that does not mean they are not valid ideas, particularly if they have a lot of support in the community.

But do they though?  Fort Regent was a manifesto item of Alvin Aaron back in January and he was whitewashed in the elections.

I am not saying Jeremy is expected to re-invent the wheel but this is what it actually sounds like at the moment.

The only people that cannot see that these issues have been tabled before and there are massive costs and funding problems here to just start with is ignoring the bigger picture.

If this is how easy it is to stand for Senator then I would advise more people to go for it.

That could work, however if the States of Jersey remain the overlords, then private businesses will be mostly unwilling to get involved.

Get Real everyone ................

How many back benchers suceed in getting bringing a proposition to teh house and then getting it passed, please come back and tell me of successful backbenchers.......

There is absolutely no point in having a manifesto - my plan of attack would be to get myself nominated by saying  that I wold enter politics in Jersey with the one intention and that would be to bring about reform in line with the Clothier Report.

If Jeremy is successful I have as I have said before he will spend the next 6  years debating, composting, corruption and casino's!

Why not get a decent job with a pension - if you are bright enough you'd soon be on 40k a year and not have the intrusion into your personal life to deal with, all that said Good Luck to you.

It makes you wonder whether a career in politics is really worth it when you end up being torn into all the time.

Give the guy a chance.

This is his first attempt at politics, he obviously has feelings for the future of our Island as some of the others standing do and wants to do something about it.  We need more people who are prepared to stand up rather than just complain and I for one will not be discounting him just because of his age. Remember William Pitt the younger was admitted to Parliament at the age of 22 and went on to become prime minister of England.
