SENATORIAL CANDIDATE

Another islander's declared themselves a candidate in next month's elections.

At 21 Jeremy Macon is the youngest to be standing for Senator.

He's just graduated from Plymouth University where he was studying Social Sciences.

They are getting younger!

How many do we have so far? 12?

He looks like a friend of Phillips!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just hope he is NOT  Right wing, should be able to view matters objectively and be able to articulate well - I hope he engages the young of the island, doesn't bother with a huge manifesto and is prepared to spend the next three years ( if successfull) debating Compost, Casinos and Corruption..............

His youth should appeal to the newly qualified 16/17 year old voters, and we could do with some young blood

The young certainly need a voice in there.  You get the impression that young people are forgotton nowadays.

Jeremy is not connected to any other senatorial candiate or group. His website was only set up this week and not yet operating fully. Everyone has been saying that they don't know what is going on in the States (which is true) and no-one listens to us (which is also true). If elected, Jeremy is going to let you know what went on in "the Chamber" each Tuesday, what the reasoning behind the topics was and you can either vote yes or nor or hopefully comment further and come up with some clever ideas. We all know the people of Jersey are really smart and can come up with brilliant ideas - well, let's hear them. Jeremy will then discuss these with you, ask you to vote on a final concensus (you will be able to see the results of the poll and all comments on line so that everything is completely honest). He will then go back to the States with what the people of Jersey think. If you really want a voice in the States then this is the first time you are going to actually get it. He will start posting the feedback from current issues on his website shortly but until this is fully operational please feel free to e-mail him with your comments on current issues on : votejeremy@hotmail.com. Your comments are essential as during the hustings he can only reflect the opinions given him to date. ie. he knows you hate GST so that's not a problem but he could do with your ideas on how the "black hole" can be filled. He knows you're not keen on the new incinerator but do you have any ideas on an alternative or an alternative site? He is going to be "your voice" if you elect him, so just give him the words.

I actually listen to the States Debates on Radio Jersey so I would not need to e mail Jeremy!

I think if sucessful he would not be able to be as open as he may desire - that is the nature of politics!

Incinerator
I suggest that Jeremy speaks to Rob Duhamel/ Guy De Faye/ Freddie Cohen/ Paul Le Claire between them they have a range of differing views and have done a lot of work on the subject.

The Black Hole
Property Development Tax, Reduce States Assembly, Abolish Communications Department, Abolish Jersey Finance Limited, Sell Off Car Parks

I wish Jeremy the very best of luck I hope that he will be successful in attracting  young people into politics and I await his manifesto.

Does Jeremy think that we will have a turnout exceeding 30 % I don't.....

Far too young for me I am afraid to say and to also say "tell me what to say in the states" is just puppet on a string talk.

I don't want somebody to be paid £43,000.00 a year for just being a voice for other peoples thoughts/original ideas.

How would a kid deal with questions without notice FFS?

Jeremy's manifesto:
No GST LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE OF JERSEY

Regenerate Fort Regent to provide affordable facilities for young people

Enforce job promotion from within the Island

Control Immigration

Safeguard our beautiful countryside

Make decisions that are best for Jersey and it's people - not simply following the UK and EU

Affordable housing - use the waterfront not green zones

Free childcare

No to importing milk & bull semen - preserve the purity of our Island breed.

Make Social Security and Income Tax fairer - reinstate full mortgage allowances

Review public transport - improve the school bus service

Investigate alternative waste disposal options

Promote and encourage real Jersey businesses (especially small businesses)- no Deemed Distributed Law

Make States Members accountable for their decisions and most of all enforce Transparency of Government so you know what's going on and why, which States Member voted for what and make them LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE OF JERSEY!

I will let others pass comment but my only comment is that there is absolutely nothing original in this.  With the exception of perhaps Fort Regent which was a JDA item back in the Constable elections, these points will and are already are on many other manifestos.

Jeremy is NOT a 'friend of Philips'.. or Dorothy's.. or Liza's (with a z!)
I can understand how an attractive, well-mannered, friendly, well-spoken, stylish young man could be seen as... serious competition!
Jeremy is happy to have the young or old, poor or rich, straight or gay vote. He is standing to represent ALL the people of Jersey.
Judge for yourself at the hustings!

Usually when a new comer comes in they usually go for Deputy first so I regard this as a jump for him.

Also, if people are going to vote on looks then that takes nearly the lot of them out!!!!

I think it will be very tough for him and that is only judging by some of the comments made by our members so far who obviously have a wider knowledge as to when or whether these ideas have been put forward before and as to whether they are workable or not.

Maybe he should come on here first?

He is also up against some pretty knowledgeable and experienced candidates but he should enjoy the ride!

If Jeremy, or his supporters for that matter, are flustered by a few comments on a message board they really do need to take a reality-check.

Best of luck young-fella, and I hope you enjoy the experience.

We know all these topics have been rehashed over and over but the plain truth is - they have never been resolved to the satisfaction of most people - otherwise we wouldn't have to constantly revisit them.

One of the reasons Jeremy is running for Senator and not Deputy is that he felt he could represent more of the youth of Jersey as a Senator with an Islandwide mandate.

He is extremely concerned about the way taxpayers' money is thrown away on things we neither want or need such as "The Sir Philip Bailhache Art Gallery" which is set to cost us all around £6M despite assurances from our Chief Minister that the States had no intention whatsoever of building it - they've already named it! We're paying more and more tax to fill a self-made black hole but instead of saving this money for 0-10 it's being wasted. If you asked most people if they could find a better use for their £6M very few would opt for an art gallery - some alternative suggestions for this money if we insist on using it are 1) To invest in the necessary medical equipment so that we no longer need to send extremely sick people to the UK and Guernsey for tests and treatment. It's bad enough being really ill but dreadful being away from family and friends when you're going through that and travelling when you're ill is exhausting. 2) Our sewerage system is failing miserably and semi-treated sewage is constantly being discharged into the sea - this needs serious investment. 3) Some people are still not on mains water or mains drains - this is 2008 and totally unacceptable. Connection to the mains is coming but painfully slowly - if we have £6M to spare it could all be done much more quickly......just a few very sensible suggestions from the taxpayers. Not throwing our money away but using it extremely wisely.

Hi Nellie, I agree with a previous comment in that I think it is time we heard these things from Jeremy himself.

States spending is always an issue and I would imagine is on every manifesto this time around.

But get Jeremy to come on here and speak to people about his plans for himself.  ;)

Jeremy has been out of the Island but will be back tomorrow and you can meet him personally at the nomination meeting on Tuesday.
